A guilty pleasure
'The Human Goddess'(1971) is a VERY guilty pleasure starring Shaw Brothers "Baby Queen" Li Ching, an HK Doris Day, to me at least. Of course, even this film is a love it-or-hate it affair, even for Li Ching fans. I've enjoyed most of Li Ching's films with the exception of 'Sexy Girls of Denmark'...what a piece of junk! At times, 'Goddess' was very whimsical and enjoyable and at times it almost spinned out of control like a broken ferris wheel. Some reviewers, like the ones above, claim that this film is marred by overacting, clumsy special effects, stale humor, a dated look, etc. I guess that's true, but I enjoyed this flick more than I thought I would. Also, some female nudity and ribald humor make 'Goddess' a questionable choice for young viewers and prudent people. Li Ching's exuberant performance helps make this piece of cotton candy-colored junk food film a blast. Director Ho Meng Hua has done better than this, but he does add some dyspeptic humor to the film's light-hearted tone(Peng Peng's Uncle Bull "loses his head", but he doesn't die thanks to Li Ching's on-screen omnipotent powers). 'The Human Goddess' does suffer from a number of flaws, but I think it's an enjoyable, albeit guilty pleasure.

Shaw's muscial at its worst
Here you have Shaw Brothers production value working against them. Instead of something that might have been a charming little fantasy, it is overblown, over acted, over musicalized, and over polished with gloss. There was no room for poignancy or sensitivity. I wouldn't wish this movie on any of my friends.

overacted and dated
Although I am a fan of movie queen Li Ching, it was quite difficult to sit through this dated movie. The jokes are stale and everybody overacts. The songs are tuneless although sung well by Tsin Ting and lipsynched by Li Ching. Disappointed by my disappointment as I had such high hopes for this movie.
