The Intellectual Trio (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region All

The eighties Hong Kong Cinema factory released numerous forgettable movies, but the action-comedy The Intellectual Trio should not be counted among them. The reasons are many; one, it was co-written by a young screenwriter named Wong Kar Wai, who would go on to write and direct Chungking Express, In the Mood For Love and 2046, among other internationally-acclaimed films. Two, it features a rare screen appearance by popular singer Sandy Lam, one of the few Hong Kong entertainers who did not attempt to mimic her singing success at the cinema. And three, it stars superstar actor-singer Leslie Cheung, whose legendary career would be cut short when he tragically passed away in 2002.

Joyce Ni (Esprit D'Amour) and Sandy Lam play two sisters who pick pockets for a living, and manage to run afoul of a pair of cops (Leslie Cheung and Billy Lau) after lifting their wallets. However, rather than arresting the two thieves, the cops are taken in by their obvious charms, and with urban, metropolitan Hong Kong as a backdrop, romance seems almost inevitable. But the girls also lifted a precious jade from a vicious hitman, who soon comes looking for his stolen property...

When Taiwanese detective Simon comes to Hong Kong for a study of logistics of the local police force, he unwittingly disrupts a narcotic bust in charged by Wing, who wrongly takes him as the drug pusher's accomplice and gets him arrested. Fortunately, Wing's superior Kok appears on time and clarifies Simon's status. Wing then is assigned to give Simon a tour around the city, they meet two pretty girls Sandy and Dandy in the tour, who are sisters as well as pick-pockets. The two men are fall in love with the two girls, while the girls have no feelings on them. After stealing a professional killer's wallet in which there's a jade medallion from a multi-millionaire whom the killer had just assassinated that night, the girls escape from the killer's by deliberately getting themselves into a car accident and being taken by the police. They happen to meet both Simon and Wing and get them involved. In order to find out the truth, the men break into the girls' apartment,butthe girls misunderstood them. After thorough explanation, they remove all previous ill. Meanwhile, the killer is lurking behind in the darkness and is ready to strike.
