YesAsia Editorial Description

Leslie Cheung stars in The Kid, a modern Hong Kong drama that takes its cue from the classic 1921 Charlie Chaplin silent film of the same name. Set during the late nineties Asian Financial Crisis, the film tells the tale of fund manager Wing (Leslie Cheung), who experiences a day filled with surprising life changes. In a single afternoon he manages to lose his fortune and all his clients, and is left destitute. But he also discovers an abandoned infant, and decides to take care of him. Four years later, the child has grown into Ming (Yip Tuen Lam), and Wing is still his guardian. But the two meet a philanthropic woman named Kwan (model Qi Qi), whose deepest regret is abandoning a child many years ago...

The Kid is an award-winning drama from director Jacob Cheung, and features fine performances from a noted cast. Besides leading actor Leslie Cheung, Di Lung and Carrie Ng co-star, and both received Hong Kong Film Awards for their supporting performances. With winning characters and affecting situations, The Kid paints an intimate portrait of regular Hong Kong people facing troubling times.

The Kid Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
A much matured Leslie playing the role of a 'crashed' stockbroker and later living in poverty. The finding of an abandoned baby on his boat at the quay turned him around to bring up the boy single handedly. By the twist of fate he had to return him to the mother 4 years later was too much to bear. Supporing role of aging Ti Lung (complete with a little pot belly) as the cop who helped him was commendable.

Somehow, I couldn't understand why the script didn't allow Leslie to get back into 'business' with a proper job much earlier on so as to provide a decent living for himself and the orphan. This was offered midway thro the film when his old colleague (now in his own business) offered him a job at the firm. He left only after the first day, probably disillusioned by all the office hype. But there could be other occupations!

I can't help but think what a wonderful father Leslie could have been.
