First to break stereotypes of eunuchs on television, this historical series follows the tumultuous life of Kim Cheo Seon who became a royal eunuch to be with his childhood lover So Hwa, King Seong Jong's concubine. Unveiling the intimate details of eunuchs, the drama covers every chapter of their lives starting from their childhood to their castration to the arduous process of becoming royal servants. Loosely based on the real-life story of Joseon Dynasty's most loyal eunuch Kim Cheo Seon who served five kings in his time, The King and I details the plight of his youth all the way to his death which by far remains one of the most brutal deaths ever recorded in Korean history.

Featuring a well-balanced lineup of both new and established actors, King And I stars Oh Man Seok (The Vineyard Man) in his career-defining role as the legendary Kim Cheo Seon. Young rising starlets Ku Hye Sun (Heart of Nineteen), Jun Hye Bin (A Witch In Love), and ex-Fin.K.L member Lee Jin make their first appearances in a period drama, alongside veteran actors Yang Mi Kyung (Dae Jang Geum) and Chun Kwang Ryul (Jumong).

Sacrificing all in the name of love, Kim Cheo Seon (Oh Man Seok) decides to castrate himself. It's the only way to enter the palace and protect his childhood love So Hwa (Ku Hye Sun) who was forced to become King Seong Jong's concubine. After a painstaking process, Cheo Seon becomes a royal eunuch. Meanwhile, So Hwa's royal status rises to the top upon the death of the queen, but having no formidable family backing, So Hwa is falsely accused and exiled from the palace. Despite Cheo Seon's desperate attempt to save her, he is eventually ordered to bestow the poison to So Hwa. She dies leaving her young son, Yeon San Goon, in the care of Cheo Seon. Soon Yeon San Goon becomes the king, but when he learns of his mother's wrongful death, the palace drowns in a bloodbath. With the country in turmoil, Cheo Seon appeals to his king to stop the madness. But will his king hear his plea?

In the Joseon Dynasty period, the kingdom was enveloped in a political maelstrom. Cheo-seon was born as a posthumous child and separated from his mother immediately. He was raised by Weol-hwa and the old Swe-gwi, who ran the eunuch school. When he meets So-hwa, the daughter of a powerful noble, he falls in love with her immediately. He voluntarily becomes a eunuch to be close to So-hwa and is assigned to work for Cho Chi-gyeom, a senior eunuch. Entering the royal palace, he sees King, Sung-Jong and So-hwa spend their first night together. He becomes So-hwa’s loyal protector. As the political battles rage on among the courtesans and wives in the palace, So-hwa is chosen by the king to be his queen and Cheo-seon vows to be her loyal servant. But So-hwa is eventually dethroned as the queen and leaves the palace in disgrace. Cheo-seon helplessly watches these events unfold and he secretly helps So-hwa. But in a cruel twist of fate, he is the one chosen to execute So-hwa’s death sentence by serving her a bowlful of poison. After So-hwa dies, he looks after her son King, Yeonsangun as if he were his own son....
