YesAsia Editorial Description
Legendary action director Lau Ka Leung directs popular kung-fu stars Kara Wai Ying Hung and Gordon Lau in The Lady is the Boss, a winning action comedy about man vs. woman, old vs. new, and good vs. bad. Wong Hsia Yuan (Lau Ka Leung) is an old-fashioned martial arts master who's so behind the times that he'd rather his school be destroyed than change its ways. He may get his wish, thanks to the young, beautiful, intelligent Chan Mei Ling (Kara Wai Ying Hung), who arrives from the states to open a new branch of the school. Armed with an unfamiliar, modern way of thinking, Mei Ling goes about recruiting new students in strange, and sometimes questionably legal ways. Yuan is furious, but when the local triads enter the picture, the two put their differences aside to take back the neighborhood! Featuring a wonderful star performance from Kara Wai Ying Hung, and Lau Ka Leung's sublime action direction and regal kung-fu presence, The Lady is the Boss is early-eighties Hong Kong action-comedy at its best!

The pre-eminent martial art moviemaker Liu Chia-liang (a.k.a. Lau Kar-leung) came up with the novel idea for this exciting and hilarious cultural, generational, and kung-fu clash. He plays a martial art master so set in his ways that his kung-fu school may be closed down. That is, until a hip, young, beautiful marketing woman arrives to take over, setting off a battle of the sexes, the ages, and even with the local crime king!

Who's the boss??
|
A wonderful look at keeping old traditions alive while blending in with modern outlook. Director Lau Kar Leung had his usual cohorts Kara Hui, Gordon Lui, Ma Tek Lo, Wang Yue, Hsiao Hu and Alexander Fu Sheng's younger brother (sorry, don't know his name) in this comedy turnaround. Love the storyline, enjoyed the 'disco effect' (please note not all of us dress like that) and all the fighting sequences were sharp. Director Lau could almost play himself as he's a very strict disciplinarian. Much thought should be given to Kara's character as she's supposed to be living in the USA and very westernised. Unfortunately her dress sense has left me wondering and her english were thrown in here and there with a few swear words and adjectives. Not her fault though, the story is still good and I enjoyed it. The finale in the gymnasium is a good mix showcasing Gordon's fitness to lend on the pulma horse with one flip, his 'bridge hands' in throwing the weights, Hsiao Hu's agility in displaying his drunken monkey moves on the floor and parallel bars (complete with an injection of cantonese operatic music). But I felt that Director Lau's fighting sequence with Wang Yu Wai, although fantastic, was overdone and almost overshadowed the previous efforts of the other boys. Certainly one for the collection!! |

Slapdash kung fu comedy
| Kara Hui's martial arts skills are impressive in "The Lady is the Boss." Unfortunately, her acting skills are a different matter. She plays a 1970s-era Chinese-American woman sent to Hong Kong to run her ailing father's martial arts school. Her attempt to "act American" basically is confined to behaving impulsively, delivering fractured English, and swearing. Lots of swearing. While there are some genuinely funny moments and some decent kung fu, too much of the film is amateurishly silly. |

Why Does Liu Do This?
| Although i am a huge fan of Liu's team, especially Kara Hui Ying Hung, what is this guys deal? This is the second movie where Kara is the lead, and he doesnt let her have the final fight. The movie is really good, although no comparison to My Young Auntie.I just feel that since he is directing, couldnt he give his amazing team the most screen time? This movie is worth it to see this team and also briefly see Kara shine as she always does. |

Great kungfu
| Fans of martial arts should not miss this VCD/DVD. It has wonderful kungfu stars as Lau Kar Leung and Hui Ying Hung gave their best performance in their role. It is also a comedy. |
