YesAsia Editorial Description

Edward Zwick directs this sumptuously designed, action-packed period epic that stars Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren. Algren, a former Civil War hero, is adrift in 1870s San Francisco after the war, a lost soul struggling to stay afloat in a booze-soaked stupor. When he is recruited by the Japanese government to train the Emperor's army, he departs for the unknown shores of Japan and begins training the soldiers in American military tactics. But these skills are useless against a band of samurai rebels led by the proud warrior Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), and Algren is easily defeated. He is taken to a remote samurai village where he learns samurai warrior codes and ways of life, developing a deep bond with Katsumoto and sharing philosophical conversations with him. Caught between the feudal culture of the ancient samurai warriors and the encroachment of modern society, Algren is forced to choose between his own culture or Katsumoto's. THE LAST SAMURAI is lavish in its dramatic period costumes and intense performances, and will thrill fans of both historical drama and action films.

"...[A] rousing, smoothly assembled historical fantasia....A handsome epic..." - Lisa, Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 12/05/2003

"...Cruise plays the role with fierce energy and swings a Bushido blade like a pro..." - Peter, Travers (Rolling Stone Critic), Rolling Stone, 12/25/2003

"[With] some of the most impressively realised battles this side of Middle Earth." - Ben, Walters (Sight & Sound Critic), Sight and Sound, 02/01/2004

"Mr. Zwick has absorbed the lethal agility of Akira Kurosawa; what registers just as powerfully as the sureness of the combatants is the ugly futility of the battles themselves." - Elvis, Mitchell (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 12/05/2003

"THE LAST SAMURAI affords the sort of fizzy enjoyment that can come with epic movie endeavors, including a meticulously detailed world unlike our own, an excellent supporting cast and some pulse-pounding fights." - Manohla, Dargis (Film Critic), Los Angeles Times, 12/05/2003

"Beautifully designed, intelligently written, acted with conviction, it's an uncommonly thoughtful epic." - Roger, Ebert (Critic and screenwriter), Chicago Sun-Times, 12/05/2003

"THE LAST SAMURAI is another stirring Civil War-era epic directed by Edward Zwick." - Widescreen Review Staff (Widescreen Review Critic), Widescreen Review, 06/01/2006

one of my favorites... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When I first saw the movie, I was really hooked. This movie is the reason why I love Japan. It literally opened my eyes and heart to Japan. Pretty soon I was looking up everything I could think of about Japan. Mostly anime lol. I loved the ending. The battle scene was very depressing but it was great. I especially loved all the scenes with Taka (Koyuki) and Nathan Algren. At first she was very ashamed having him in her house, but her feelings for him changed. It was soooo romantic!! Great movie! ^_^

Wow Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I saw the trailers for this movie, and I thought it was going to be stupid. But after actually watching the movie, I was moved by the determination Tom Cruise displayed as Captain Algren. It really wowed me, especially the last battle that took place. I was down to tears. You must get this movie!!

TWO THUMBS UP! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
how amazing it is to see how brave the samurai's are. i love to watch this every now and then cause it touched my heart esp that time when Tom Cruise started to live like a samurai and when he embraces the life of a samurai. from gun to sword..sword vs gun? how can you ever survive such thing in a battle? it is in your heart. you will learn what loyalty, self-respect and respect for enemies is when you watch this movie. really great, very amazing, very touching! what more can i say, TWO THUMBS UP!!!

Excellent! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A must see! One of the best war movies I've seen in a very long time, and I'm a girl and girls don't usually like watching war movies, but I would love to watch this one again! I love Ken Watanabe! I think they needed to find a taller american in the movie, Tom Cruise was very short compared to Ken! :-p
