Korean crime classic
| In "The Last Witness", Ha Myung Joong plays Oh Byung Ho, a rumpled-looking, overcoat-wearing police detective reminiscent of Peter Falk in the old "Columbo" TV series. However, this film tells a much darker and more twisted story than any Columbo ever tried to solve. Set in the 1970s, the movie deals with murders that resulted from a web of intrigue that has its origins in the Korean War. At the heart of the story is the lovely Ji Hye (Jung Yun Hee), the daughter of a North Korean commander. Poor Ji Hye ends up suffering a lifetime of abuse and betrayal and the fruits of that life yield seeds of bitterness that will have the direst of consequences. As we watch Detective Oh untangle the mystery behind the murders we get a panoramic view of life in Korea in the 1970s and see how the horrors of war can continue to cause ripples in people's lives down through the subsequent decades. "The Last Witness" is a fascinating, intricate, and interestingly-filmed story. I recommend it highly. Prospective purchasers should note a couple things. First, this is a very long movie, lasting over 2 1/2 hours. Second, while originally censored scenes have been restored to this DVD version of the movie, the movie does not appear to have been digitally remastered and the image quality is inconsistent. Don't let that deter you. This thriller is well worth watching and its unexpected ending packs a real punch. |
