Of the numerous TV and movie adaptations of Jin Yong's influential wuxia novel The Legend Of Arching Hero (a.k.a. The Legend of the Condor Heroes), this 2003 CCTV production from Mainland China could well be the most faithful so far. Starring Li Yapeng (husband of Hong Kong pop diva Faye Wong) and top actress Zhou Xun as the central characters Guo Jing and Huang Rong, respectively, the series follows the exploits of the heroic couple and other kung fu masters during the Jurchen invasion of Song Dynasty China. The Legend of Arching Hero carries a 40 million yuan price tag (a titanic figure by Asian standards) and it shows here in the production values, particularly in the sets and the wardrobe design. Also noteworthy are the spectacular Mongolian scenery and fight choreography, which are pure eye candy, while the appropriate use of CG helps to convey the outrageous power of the outlandish martial arts battles peppered throughout the series' 42 episodes.
