Aired in 2000, TVB's 20-episode grand period drama The Legend of Lady Yeung revolves around Tang Dynasty consort Yeung Gwai Fei (Yang Guifei), one of the four great beauties of ancient China. Loved above all by Emperor Xuanzong, the storied Lady Yeung has served as inspiration for many literary and dramatic pieces. Still a newcomer to acting at the time, Anne Heung, recently crowned Miss Hong Kong in 1998, rose to the occasion to play the tragic heroine, earning much praise for her breakthrough performance. Appropriately enough, the role of Xuanzong went to Kwong Wa, who had played an emperor the year before in Happy Ever After and would go on to star in The King of Yesterday and Tomorrow in 2003. The drama's supporting cast includes Melissa Ng, Florence Kwok, Fiona Yuen, Liu Kai Chi, Tsang Wai Kuen, Derek Kwok, and Louis Yuen.

It takes only one glance and a twist of fate for Emperor Xuanzong (Kwong Wa) to fall in love with Yeung (Anne Heung). Mesmerized by her beauty, he makes her imperial consort and showers favor on her. Yeung's favored status, however, invites the jealousy of other consorts, in particular Lady Wu (Florence Kwok) who uses dirty tricks to try to kick her out of the palace. She even causes Yeung to lose her unborn child. But all these hardships only make Xuanzong love Yeung even more, while grudges against her continue to deepen. When conflicts between Yeung's cousin (Tsang Wai Kuen), a trusted court official, and commander An Lushan (Louis Yuen) lead to a rebellion, Xuanzong is faced with a military uprising that threatens the throne, and calls from the court for the execution of Yeung.

In the Tang Dynasty, Emperor XUAN ( KWONG WA ) was deeply infatuated with his beautiful Concubine YANG ( HEUNG HOI LAN, ANNE ), who emerged from a poor orphan to the Emperor’s most beloved concubine in the palace.
