影片中的“我”﹐是一個奉公守法的北京舊警察﹐編導以其晚年對往事的回憶構成此片故事。清末﹐二十多歲的“我”失業後﹐由鄰居趙老警介紹﹐當了清政府的警察﹐目睹了清兵的腐敗。“我”曾派在秦大人家當門警﹐1919年﹐“五四”運動爆發﹐秦大人倒台。“我”升了巡警﹐並結識學生領袖申遠。不幾年﹐秦大人又上台了﹐“我”又被派在秦公館當門警。秦的官愈做愈大﹐老百姓愈過愈窮﹐“我”被降為三等警察﹐死了妻子﹐留下一雙兒女。緊急關頭﹐“我”救助了地下共產黨員申遠。抗戰時讓兒子參加了八路軍。後來﹐“我”因兒子是八路軍被抓進監獄﹐獄中又遇申遠。在申遠的幫助下﹐“我”終於清醒了。但未及解放﹐“我”在街頭凍餓而死。
In the story .I am a law-abiding policeman in old Beijing,recollecting the bygone days in the old age.In the end of Tsing Dynasty, the 20 years-old "I"became out of work.Introduced by the neighbour old man called Zhao,"I"work as a police for the Tsing government,discerning the corruption of Tsing soldiers ."I" had ever been the janitor of Monsignor Qin.In 1919,the "Wu Si" culture movement broke out ,Monsignor fell from power.Then "I" became a cop and met the students 'leader Shen Yuan.Not before long,Monsignor Qin came back to power again,"I" was dispatched to be the janitor of him for the second time.As Qin became more and more powerful ,common people became poorer and poorer."I" was demotion to be the 3-grade police .My wife died,leaving a son and a daughter.At this moment ,"I"save Shen Yuan the underground commie.During the Counter-Japan War,my son attend the "Ba Lu "army .Then "I"was put into prison because my son is "Ba Lu"army ."I"met Shen Yuan again in the prison.In the help of him,"I" finally woke.But couldn't wait for the liberation ."I" died in the street in a cold day.
