Meet Philip Marlowe, private eye. Maybe you already have. After all, Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Montgomery and other have played Raymond Chandler's fictional hero. But Marlowe is different. Not content with repeating the standard movie Marlowe, director Robert Altman (M*A*S*H, Nashville) nearly reinvents him in this daring version of The Long Goodbye. His Marlowe (played with laid-back finesse by Elliott Gould) is real, an unromanticized snoop for hire in an unromanticized L.A. The case involves what the police dismiss as a murder/suicide. Marlowe wishes the answer was that easy. Fifty bucks a day plus expenses (Marlowe's going rate) buys a lot of intrigue. And there are always folks (Sterling Hayden, Jim Bouton, Mark Rydell, an unbilled Arnold Schwarzenegger and more) who have something to hide. Of course, Marlowe's never been in business for the money. He's doing what he does best. And doing it like never before.
