The Ultimate "Huang Mei" Story Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
If you see one movie in the "Huang Mei" genre, this is the one! The movie encompasses excellent performances from veteran actress Betty Loh Ti and newcomer Ivy Ling Po. The musical scores are refreshing, catchy and contagious, even after 40 years. You just wanna sing-along, even if you don't know Mandarin. As to the plot/storyline, everyone in China knows the legend. This movie immortalizes the young lovers. Subtitles are available in various languages making the movie easy to follow.

Betty Loh Ti's wonderful Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is still THE ultimate movie of the "Huang Mei" genre. Almost everything was done to perfection, except for the the height problem between Betty Loh Ti and Ivy Ling Po. (This made Betty Loh Ti looked more like an older sister to Ivy Ling Po and I'm sure it worked against her in the long run). Who could not help liking Ivy Ling Po because she was so cute and loveable in this role. Besides that, she could act. Height and age problem aside, Betty Loh Ti also played her role to perfection. She gave a multi-layered performance and showed great skill as an actress. Her male impersonation was even more MALE than Ivy Ling Po, who would on a few occasion lapse into female gesture. It was rumored that Betty Loh Ti lost the Asian Movie Queen award by one vote. Well, what the heck. If Lin Dai could win movie queen with "Les Belles", I wouldn't put much value in how these awards are determined anyway. My mom still insists that Betty Loh Ti acted better than anyone else in the movie just judging by acting skills alone, so who am I to contradict my mom. I just recommend this movie to all.

A near perfect masterpiece !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Watched today, Betty Loh Ti who won the Golden Horse award was still as perfect and not outdated at all. All her scences from facial expressions to dody language is perfect. No one could be able to replace her in this role.
Ivy Ling Po, by contrasts was abnit over-acting in some scenes and may be more suitable for the theatre.
The songs are great too.

Again, this original made the Tsui Hark's remake looked silly.

love eterne is a masterpiece! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The Love Eterne is a wonderful, great movie. I loved the colors, sets, costumes, room interiors as well as the music and story. The walk through the countryside of the two lovers is visually beautiful, and so charming! I want to give this VCD as gifts for Christmas to all my friends and family. -Joe Roberts, Whitewater, Calif. USA.

The No. 1 Shaw Classic !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I recommend this film to everyone Chinese or foreigner if there must watch only one Chinese film.
Definitely Shaw Bros' best film, the director's as else well as Lok Dai and Ivy Ling Po, best songs of the genre too. Although this film brought Ling Po to fame, the already very popular then Lok Dai(Betty)stole all the scenes deserved the best actress award more than anyone in history. From beginning to end, female to male and back to female, every scene of her is flawless and memorable. Even watched today, her acting is still great. Anxious to see her in "Dreams of the Red Chamber". The songs by Ching Ting and Ling Po are all good. Watch out the male/female voices of Ching Ting.
Watch it every year !!

Ivy Ling Po's masterpiece! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What a great movie this is! In 1963 when it was first released, Ivy Ling Po became a superstar overnight. She would reign supreme at Shaw studio for about 7 years until the craze for "huang mei " opera films went out of fashion in 1969 with the release of "The Three Smiles". This movie is argulably the most awaited Shaw film on dvd. Here it is presented lovingly and with respect. A whole second disc is for a documentary on Li Han Hsiang, an Ivy Ling Po music tribute and an enlightening documentary tracing the rise and wane of "huang mei" opera. It was great to see veteran singer Tsin Ting being interviewed. A humourous moment is when Cheng Pei Pei while interviewing Ivy Ling Po, seemed to remember the 1963 events better than Ivy herself. This was regarding the casting of Betty Loh Tih in "A Maid From Heaven" to be replaced by Chiang Ching who defected to Taiwan with Li Han Hsiang after just shooting a scene. The final actress who was selected was of course Fang Yin but it was great to be able finally to see photos of Loh Tih and Chiang Ching dressed in the Fang Yin role. These special features alone are worth the price of the dvd not to mention the excellent masterpiece that Li Han hsiang created. Buy this without any hesitation. Whateever age group you are in, you are in for a treat!

Incredible Presentation of Classic Milestone Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
As the owner of the Taiwan Cosmos version, I was shocked by the framing of the Cosmos disc, even though that disc was letterboxed, it was just a zoomed-in picture, why this was done I have no idea, it's almost as if they started with a pan and scan print and just slapped a black border across the top and bottom of the picture, covering up even more of the picture, so when you compare the picture between the two discs, you gain valuable picture information on the left, right, top and bottom. The picture looks to be in perfect balance now, the director really used the entire widescreen image and it's awesome to finally be able to see it the way it was meant to be seen. Although a few times it seems like a few frames were lost (I may be wrong) there were very few scratches and no cigarette burns at all, those were all over the Cosmos disc. The only complaint I had about the Celestial disc was that a few scenes seemed to be out of focus. Although this disc made the entire Cosmos disc look out of focus and completely washed out. The colors on the Celestial disc are very vibrant.

The 5.1 Dolby Digital track for the most part is just spread out in the front three channel, if not just the center channel. The finale of the picture almost blew me out of my seat when the rear two channels finally kicked it. The 5.1 on the Cosmos disc seemed to be nothing more than just a matrix surround of some sort as you could always hear the dialog come out of the rear speakers.

An EXCELLENT DVD!!!!
