Legendary director Chang Cheh brings righteous justice to the screen in The Magnificent Trio, a costume swordplay epic that recalls the Akira Kurosawa classic The Seven Samurai. Jimmy Wang Yu is Lu Fang, a wandering swordsman who comes to the aid of a group of poor farmers who are being oppressed by the local magistrates. The farmers have kidnapped a magistrate's daughter in hopes of being heard by the local government, and after learning of the farmer's plight, Lu Fang joins them as a comrade and protector. Aiding him are Huang Liang (Zheng Lei) and Yan Zi Qing (Law Lit), who both switch sides from the oppressors to the oppressed after the magistrates hire bandits to coerce the farmers. With the best interests of the people at heart, the trio fight back against the magistrates, while attempting to find a higher authority to quell the oppression of the farmers.
