YesAsia Editorial Description

Hans Christian Anderson's classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid gets reinterpreted for Chinese audiences in Kao Li's The Mermaid, a fun-filled Shaw Brothers produced, Huangmei opera. Released in 1964, this mythical tale centers on a scholar named Zhang Zhen (Ivy Ling Po) who finds himself taken in by a high official (Yang Chi Ching) after the death of his beloved parents. Soon enough, Zhang Zhen falls in love with his benefactor's attractive, but haughty daughter, Peony (Li Ching). However, there are two problems preventing a union between the two. For one, her father simply won't approve of the match, and even more importantly, Peony has no interest in Zhang as a suitor to begin with!

Stuck inside with nothing to do but study for exams, Zhang tries to brighten his spirits by feeding fish in a nearby pond. On one fateful day, a carp transforms itself into a beautiful woman (also played by Li Ching) who just so happens to resemble Peony! Plenty of misunderstandings and misadventures ensue when this lovely Carp Spirit tries to adapt to life on the surface! Who will Zhang choose - his first love, Peony or the vivacious mermaid? Winner of three awards at the 12th Asian Film Festival, including Best Actress (Li Ching), Most Versatile Talent Award (Ivy Ling Po), and Best Sound Recording (Wang Yung Hua), The Mermaid is a fine showcase for actresses Ivy Ling Po in yet another gender bending performance and "Baby Queen" Li Ching, who takes on dual roles! As far as Huangmei opera pictures are concerned, The Mermaid is one Shaw Brothers production full of lighthearted fun!

Here, a carp turns into a "fairy" which looks just like the gender-bending hero's lady love. The lovely Li Ching gets this plum dual role, sharing the screen with such other characters as a turtle and lobster fairy. But only the last second intervention of the Goddess of Mercy can save the day, leading to an ending that is truly universal living happily ever after.

** Awards:
Asian Film Festival (1965 - 12th) : Best Actress (Li Ching),
The Most Versatile Talent Award (Ivy Ling Po),
Best Sound Recording (Wang Yung-hua)

An Enchanting Mermaid Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This genuine Huangmei opera is again beautifully remastered by Celestial with good colour, picture and sound! The whole storyline was fantastically orchestrated. Li Jing unexpectedly played 2 characters, the proud, spoiled daughter, Peony, of the Imperial Officer and also the sensitive, caring carp that transformed into a human resembling Peony. Li Jing portrayed her character well in both roles and Ivy Ling Po exuded her versatile talents in performance and songs. I find the parts where 2 Peonys appeared in front of her parents and the 2 Judges Pao/Bao Zheng very amusing! Well done, director Kao Li. Despite the 2 Asian movie queens looked great in the showcase, I feel their make up was a bit unnatural. Nevertheless, this Huangmei gem on DVD is still delightful and entertaining. It will be added to my treasured Ling Po’s collections!

Worth the wait Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have been waiting for this release for a long long time. As an ardent fan of Li Ching, this must be the ultimate collection of her movies. Beautifully restored - and all those previous poor quality versions of this movie can now be binned. Thank you Celestial for this one. Thank you.

'The Mermaid' is an enjoyable film Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I've been a Li Ching fanboy for over a year now, after seeing her in 'Hong Kong Rhapsody', and I've been eagerly anticipating the DVD release for 'The Mermaid'. I can say that it was worth the wait. Li Ching plays dual roles as a prime minister's spoiled daughter and an empathic carp that morphs into human form. Li Ching's BMI(body-mass-index)may have started to increase at this time(she looked leaner in 'West Chamber'), but I don't care. Like a beloved family member, I like Li Ching no matter how much she weighs! Ivy Ling Po once again shows us that she can gracefully play a man with some verisimilitude. Ching Miao makes another guest appearance as Judge Pao/Bao Zheng, the coppery-faced, fair, and impartial judge with a long beard. Huangmei opera films aren't everyone's cup of tea; frankly, my knowledge of Huangmei opera is very limited. Nonetheless, I enjoyed 'The Mermaid', a film from a genre lost in the past.

A good collection Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I watched this movie so many times ever since I was a kid. Even now, to watch it again, I still enjoy it. Both actresses were very good. If you like Huangmei Opera, please don't miss this one. You will enjoy it and it will be treated as one of your Huangmei Opera collection.

A Bonafide Huangmei Classic Is Brilliantly Restore Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Here in all its remastered glory is the Ling Po/Li Ching masterpiece for posterity. In the 60s, Ling Po starred in a string of huangmei musicals mostly impersonating male scholars. Shaw Studios paired her with a few Shaw actresses in these operas but only 2 in my opinion were good enough. They were Betty Loh Tin and Li Ching. This movie won Li Ching the Asian Movie Queen award making her at 17, the youngest winner ever. Ling Po gave her usual polished performance and walked off with the Most Versatile Talent award. Granted that huangmei opera is an acquired taste, it will still be worth your while to pick up this gem on dvd to appreciate a taste of great acting from 2 movie queens. My favourite genre is wu xia but I still love this movie as it has the stamp "CLASSIC" all over it.
