Movie queen Ivy Ling Po is ideally cast as a male scholar in this historical Huangmei Opera romance. It’s a tragic love story between the scholar and a local beauty (played by Fang Ying). He polishes mirrors as a pretext to get closer to his love, who signals her approval by tossing him a bunch of lichees. From that point on the course of true love proves operatically rocky, complete with murder and suicide.

Well-executed huangmei opera Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Mirror and the Lichee" is a predictably excellent huangmei opera from Shaw Brothers. Ivy Ling Po is at the top of her game in her usual role as the bright young scholar whose unfortunate circumstances have placed obstacles between him and his lady love (Fang Ying). The costumes are opulent, the music is superb, and the direction is top notch. Check out how beautifully director Kao Li composes most of the scenes! The film's story includes plenty of humor and romance, with Lydia Shum getting a chance to show off her comic chops as she becomes infatuated with the young scholar. If you've watched many of these huangmei operas, then the story may seem very familiar. Moreover, the ending takes the easy way out; it leaves unaddressed what likely will be major repercussions flowing from the actions of the lead characters. Nonetheless, "The Mirror and the Lichee" charms the viewer and is engaging from start to finish. Highly recommended.

Ivy Ling Po shines in remake! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This story is very famous and practically every Chinese knows it. This remake by Shaw studio in 1967 is quintessential viewing because it has so many strengths. There is Ivy Ling Po, the famed male impersonator, who by 1967 had perfected her art of impersonating a male scholar. Then there is Lydia Sum who almost steals the show as the fat maid. Alison Chang Yen lends strong support as the resourceful maid who comes to the rescue of helpless Fang Yin. What can I say about Fang Yin except that she was born to play such roles and she did it again perfectly here. The songs can either make or break a film in the huangmei genre and I must say the songs in this movie are refreshingly different. So take a chance and order this movie. It will delight you. I have deducted half a star for some recycled costumes from The Grand Substitution and West Chamber. Otherwise all is perfect.
