Coming of Age in the Taiwan Triads
If the Young and Dangerous series was ever adapted into a TV drama, it would probably look something like The Outsiders. Though ostensibly an idol drama, The Outsiders transcends the limitations of the genre and its inexperienced cast with mature themes, a surprisingly uncompromising story, and a gray look at the triad life that is as dark as it is romanticized. High art, this is not, but it's 20 episodes of well-made entertainment. And my, they sure have nice hair.

As the S.E. Hinton-inspired title implies, The Outsiders is first and foremost a story about youth from the wrong side of the tracks. The drama follows the lives of three longtime friends as they grow from delinquent students to triad leaders; as the world around them continues to change, their brotherhood stays true to the very end. The Outsiders opens in fairly comfortable idol drama territory with photogenic too-cool-for-school protagonists and a burgeoning romance between group leader Yu Hao (Dylan Kuo) and girl-next-door Xiao Yan Zi (Ady An). But the story soon leaves schoolyard coming-of-age tropes behind for grittier rites of passage. Just as Xiao Yan Zi chooses love without ever looking back, the boys enter the triads, understanding that theirs is a road of no return.

Much like the Young and Dangerous films, The Outsiders both romanticizes and humanizes. The story takes its characters through the different stages of triad life, from their first hit, to their rise in the ranks, to bloody rivalries and deceptive triad politics, balancing the darker elements with humor, camaraderie, and romance. The drama does not shy from violence and tragedy, or more specifically violent tragedy, and each person must pay a price for the life he/she chooses. Relationship issues, though at times plodding, are not unrealistic. Although it descends a bit too much into melodrama near the end, as a whole The Outsiders delivers an unexpectedly compelling and engaging story.

True to its Young and Dangerous comparison, acting is not the selling point of this drama, but the sum proves to be greater than its parts. While lead Dylan Kuo cuts a fine figure in his leather jacket, he is not much of a thespian, although his blank acting seems oddly appropriate for the role. Ady An also gets the short end of the deal, occupying a rather muted character in a drama full of brash types. Zhang Xun Jie fares better, bringing welcome comic relief and exhibiting great chemistry with the brassy Joelle Lu. Blue Lan, whose earlier acting pedigree at the time consisted of looking suspiciously like Takeshi Kaneshiro in Meteor Garden, is surprisingly effective in a quiet, complex role. Bad guys Xie Cheng Jun and A Pang are caricaturishly sinister, but quite entertaining, while Hong Kong action film staple Ken Lo cashes a paycheck here as a two-faced shades-wearing triad boss. No single actor shines, but together the cast makes almost perfect sense.

Ultimately, that is the draw of The Outsiders: it works very well as a complete glossy package. The images and shooting style are sleek, the action is decent, the acting is serviceable, the people are pretty, the premise is interesting, and the story folds out well. The triad theme, though common in cinema, is actually rarely covered to this extent in television, and certainly not with such populist, photogenic trappings. Perhaps the biggest drawback of The Outsiders is that it does not cater to its target teenaged audience as well as it should, but for the rest of us, that's a good thing.

Mixed Feelings Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
I seriously dont know how i feel about this drama. I dont know if its the fact that i just dont have the patience to sit through this or is it the fact that its THAT boring, in the end i have tried to sit down and watch this drama 3 times without getting anywhere. I usually watch up to the 2nd epi and im like ok i've had enough. However my mom has told me this was a good drama and she never likes any idol dramas.

alright series Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
the story line was pretty good for this sort of series. the actors were pretty good looking but the acting was a bit mediocre. story was sort of sad. if you're a fan of these type of series, it's ok to watch. not as terrible as people say. especially if u like the actors.

100 % waste of time.... Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
Absolutely 100% agreed w/reviewer Kat on this series.
I dont know about part II since i haven't watched that. I tried a couple of episodes in part I & then totally skipped here & there & then just scanned thru the ending since it's free.

There is the tall ok looking dude of the main guy & the big S' EX B/F is ok looking too but attractive characters is never a good reason to like a series.
i didnt like it one bit especially on the sweet ordinary looking main girl who felt in love w/the gangster & then later on transforming herself into a gangster as well?????? What in the world??? perhaps love really makes a person do the stupidest things?? god.... unbelievable. i think that's just plain crazy.

110 % not worth your time let alone $$$$$$$$$$$$$

i dont understand how people always say all those taiwanese dramas are so good & romantic. damn this series is so not for me..... horrible.

The only series i find it enjoyable & wanting to finish the ending is:

1/ Meteor Garden - my first taiwanese drama

2/ Lavender - ok la....

3/ NINE BALL series - like this series very much - Chen Yu Fan is a good singer - great theme songs. I find this series very enjoyable of course it has it's cheesy moments & all that but it's quite interesting. the songs are quite enjoyable too if you dont like yappy teary love stories then one is right for you - not all lovey lovey love all day long & not too boring making you rewind & all that.

Korean dramas - after finishing ENDLESS LOVE all the rest seem to be the same.

but recently i've finished " SAVE YOUR LAST DANCE FOR ME " i kind of like this one. some ppl said it's the same as the taiwanese drama " prince turns into a frog "??? but since i didnt watch that one yet - the korean save the last dance seem to be the original one for me. VERY NICE THEME SONGS>>>>>>>>>>>

happy reading guys & happy holidays !!!
