YesAsia Editorial Description
Running after a pickpocket, Detective Kang Jae Hyuk (Lee Dong Wook, My Girl) finds out how problematic journalist Choi Soo Jin (Hyun Young, The Art of Seduction) can be when the fish skewer she's eating magically ends up impaled in his abdomen. Is it destiny, love at first sight? Not quite. But the two start to form a reluctant but formidable alliance: he's good looking, a great fighter, and a good detective. And she's determined to get her story done. Together, they make The Perfect Couple.
Understanding right from the start that what makes comedy work are gags and the actors who deliver them, Kim Jung Woo made his directorial debut in 2006 with the low-key high-returns comedy Oh! My God. Starring comic veterans Choi Sung Kook and Shin Yi, the film was a surprising success, with over 2.5 million admissions. Kim, who started his career as a screenplay writer alongside Taegukgi director Kang Je Gyu, comes back with The Perfect Couple, showing Lee Dong Wook in a new light and once again taking advantage of TV star Hyun Young's explosive comic talent.

The Perfect Couple sees the return of Korean director Kim Jung Woo who previously enjoyed success with his 2006 boxing comedy debut Oh! My God. Here, he again goes for a mix of genres, ambitiously attempting to combine elements of comedy, romance and police thriller into an entertaining whole. The film certainly struck a chord with audiences, pulling in an impressive 2.5 million admissions at the domestic box office during its release, most likely due to its offering something a little different than the norm. After a couple of amusing character introductions, the plot begins as harebrained journalist Choi Soo Jin (Hyun Young, recently in The Art of Seduction) accidentally stabs Detective Kang Jae Hyuk (Lee Dong Wook, also in My Girl and horror Arang) with a fish snack skewer while he is chasing a criminal. From this unconventional beginning a relationship of sorts gradually grows, as the two become involved with making a reality television program about his police work. However, the path to romance is far from smooth, not least since the two barely seem to be able to stand each other and spend most of their time scheming ways to cause embarrassment or pain. Strangely enough, despite it being pitched as a wacky relationship film, The Perfect Couple actually features very little in the way of courtship or passion, and director Kang seems happy enough for things to progress solely on the basis that the viewer expects the two characters to end up in each others' arms. This is probably for the best, since Kang and Choi never make for a believable, let alone perfect couple, and the romantic aspect of the plot falls pretty flat. This is mainly due to the fact that whilst Kang's moody detective is played relatively straight, Choi is a shrill, psychotic drunkard who, up until a last minute of self-realisation, acts like a mean-spirited idiot. Although mismatched couple films with aggressive female protagonists have been popular since the success of My Sassy Girl, in this case things are pushed a little too far, and Choi never really comes across as being more than a thoughtless caricature. Indeed, it is hard to imagine anyone not feeling sympathy for the much put-upon Kang, who spends most of the film being abused and humiliated, and who displays the patience of a saint in not shooting her in the line of duty. Oddly enough, this doesn't particularly get in the way of the film being enjoyable, and in this it can perhaps be seen as an anti-romantic comedy, with the characters kicking and screaming at each other up until the last moment and quite possibly beyond - something which is certainly preferable to the usual sudden spouting of teary-eyed protestations of love commonly witnessed in this kind of film, and Kang deserves some credit for not forcing his hand and asking the viewer to believe that the two could switch so abruptly from antagonism to amour. The dysfunctional central relationship aside, The Perfect Couple is really a film of two halves, with the first being given over to one-upmanship comedy and the second to drug-busting police thrills. Although the two never quite gel together, they are both effective, with a good few laughs early on, mainly at the expense of Choi's daft behaviour and the couple's incessant bickering, and with some surprisingly bloody action and fight scenes towards the climax. This does make for rather uneven viewing, and the film lacks any real sense of identity or coherence, though the various shifts in tone do prevent things from ever becoming too dull or predictable. As a result, despite not being wholly successful, the film is entertaining and amusing enough, and it does manage to stand out from the hordes of other similarly themed efforts. More than anything, it's nice to see a director trying something a little different with the romantic comedy form, a genre which is badly in need of such innovation. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

| This is a very nice comedy film. Something that i didn't expect from Lee Dong Wook. Hyun Young i have seen her a couple of times but always playing second lead or should i say "extra". But in this film i really like her character. I should say that she did pretty well. A film that you should watch. |

For a Couple - only 5% romance
|
TPC is pretty well a mixture of screwball comedy and serious impassioned drama frolics, although the more serious dramatics often move into slapstick, especially with most of the fight sequences - and Dong Wook keeps well busy in those. A comedy drama in the main, you do get lots of action in this (along with Hyung/Cupid's fish stick just missing Dong Wook's heart), but the pyrotechnics are mainly satirical. As a romantic film, its only really about 5% in this case as the 'romance' or 'couple' elements become more of a wink at the audience in suggesting that the two intrepid heroes here may actually fall in love with one other at the finish, when in fact the romance, is also played out as pure caricature. In fact you could have a 'spot the romance competition' with this film due to the lack of one. Most of the time Dong Wook and Hyung are surviving each others 'pillow fight' verbal banters as Hyung tries to orchestrate the cops into her endeavor to catch criminals and using Dong Wook as her stooge. The humor, though, in this film didn't quite hit the mark for me (Hyung is much directly funnier in "My Wife is a Gangster 3") and although there are some good humorous moments, especially in the opener, there doesn't seem a enough to highly recommend it as a great comedy. Its a good capers movie, and the two leads give good performances and its definitely worth a watch, but don't expect side splitting moments. I like Hyung Young, though, and she is certainly a talented actress to look out more for in the future. She has made some fine roles lately, is very astute and honed in her comedy craft and quite vibrant and energetic personality on and off screen. It will be interesting to see what other comedy roles she does. Or even drama! I have also enjoyed this and Dong Wook's last movie "Arang" and its interesting to see him in further projects since his fame enhanced role in "My Girl", but, Dong Wook, not surely another cop in the next one. Overall, a very screwball action comedy with 5% romance and lots of slapstick to the action bits. |
