Of the Shaw Brothers Venoms, Wai Pak never quite reached the fame and popularity of his fellow brethen despite being the best looking of the lot. After a brief Shaw Bros. career most notable for Five Deadly Venoms, he jumped to upstart Golden Harvest in 1979. Wai took supporting roles in kung fu classics like Sammo Hung's Magnificent Butcher and Prodigal Son, as well as Jackie Chan's The Young Master. Proper leading man status for Wai would come in the 1980 kung fu flick The Cheeky Chap and the 1981 supernatural thriller The Phantom Killer. A mix of martial arts, suspense, and macabre, The Phantom Killer is one of the few films directed by popular veteran actor Stanley Fung of the Lucky Stars series, most recently seen in Hooked On You. Revolving around a supernatural murder mystery, the film offers a more interesting story than the typical 80s period kung fu vehicle, packing in both entertaining action sets and some ghostly scares.

Young and dashing Siu is a hero to his town and the apple of every gal's eye, much to the anger of local baddie Kam. Their quiet town is shaken by a series of brutal murders, with all the victims being young girls. Constable Chiu can't make sense of the case, but he begins to suspect Siu who had been seen with one of the victims before her death. Chiu trails Siu as he meets up with his lover, and sees Kam attack Siu on the way back. Chiu rushes forward to help, and in the chaos, he thrusts his sword into a Buddhist statue. When blood starts seeping out, Chiu realizes that the statue is actually a corpse...

浪子蕭放英俊瀟洒，性格好鋤強伕弱，曾為樂平鎮殲滅匪徒而深受鎮民愛戴，少女們更對之傾心，由此與金天霸結下不解之仇。樂平鎮此時發生一連串女子被殺案，使保安隊長趙松束手無策。趙得悉被害女子死前均與蕭會面，遂暗中追查蕭放。期間，蕭正探望其戀人杜仙仙，仙正為其姊失蹤而擔憂。蕭開解一番後離去，金天霸在途中偷襲，蕭被追殺。追殺途中，趙松與鄉紳董千戶等趕至解困，混亂中，趙松錯刀剌入一神像中，見一股血水破口流出，大感驚訝，遂命人將神像抬回鎮，發現一血肉模糊之屍體……

Talented, young and handsome, Siu is a hero to the town folks and idol of the girls. Still, he has an avowed enemy, bad man Kam. Lately, several girls are murdered immediately after they met Siu. Sheriff Chiu is unable to find a lead but decides to trail Siu. Siu calls on his long time girlfriend Sien Sien but find her grieved by her sister's disappearance. Something untold does happen to Siu as he walks into an ambush set up by Kam. Chiu rushes to Siu's rescue and incidentally finds blood coming out from a porcelain statue. The statue turns out to be an enameled corpse......
