YesAsia Editorial Description

Taiwan's pop troubadour Chris Yu returns with another album full of mellow rhythms for all lovers of touching Mandarin ballads. Yu, who is not a prominent person when it comes to celebrity gossip because he has always treated his private life and his career as two totally different matters, is known for his tender music touch. As for his songs, the topic of love will always stay one of the main issues of all major songwriters, and Chris is a true expert in this field, perhaps because his favorite occupation is to write good songs. Overall his new CD includes 10 songs all revolving around true love with the title track The Poet's Tears (Track 2), "Writing A Love Letter" (Track 7), "Like A Love Song" (Track 6), "Hope You're Fine" (Track 5), and "White Lover" (Track 1) standing out as some of Yu's essential new creations.

Lack of improvisation Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Chris is an exceptionally good singer, and he also has an extensive experience on songwriting. However, in this album, his skills are not maximally carried out.

The main track #2, "The Poet's Tears", despite being penned so poetically (which is why it stands out) by Chris's long-time partner, Li-Nan Li, Chris's composition is just above average and his singing technique is dull. Whether in the composition or in the singing technique, we won't find much improvisation anymore, which used to be Chris's hallmark if we remember his previous masterpieces such as "In Love with Another Person", "The Loneliness in Taipei" or "The Woman's Downstair". Neither could we find any high-pitched notes which whenever paired with Chris's uniquely bass voice would make the song stands out.

Track #5, "I hope You are OK", is just as dull as the main track in terms of composition and singing style. However, this track ranks lower in terms of lyrics. Despite its impressive rhythms, the used wordings are old and barely original at all. "Why am I still awake? That memories have come back again." This particular line could have been written hundreds times even by a beginner poet or lyricist.

Other tracks like track #7 "Write Love Diary", #track 1 "White Lover" and track #4 "Freedom" (Lyricist is "Voice") are among the better tunes after the two above.

Chris has a potential to be a good singer, but he, like many other talented singers/songwriters, is too afraid to demonstrate his "difference" or unique style that could certainly polish this album. Love songs are everywhere, but stylized love songs are rare and those are what stand out.

Good achievement Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
After waiting for a long time (more than one year) after his last album has been released on October 2004 (The First Ten Thousand Days), I'm very satisfied when I heard a news that Chris has released his new album. As same as before, love is the main theme of his album. He has such a talent in writing very romantic lyric! And I like it. This album is very good, good job for you, Chris. It's indicated that Chris isn't only a talented singer but also an excellent songwriter. I'm really enjoy it, especially Shi Ren De Yan Lei, it's very touching. For all the Chris' fans and especially whoever who like to hear a ballad and romantic Chinese song, you should buy this album!
