CCTV's fantasy series Lotus Lantern was a huge hit in 2005, and now the original creators are back with the prequel The Prelude Of Lotus Lantern, reuniting a star-studded cast that includes Vincent Chiao as "Erlang Shen", Liu Xiaoqing as "Queen Mother", and Zhou Yang as "Third Holy Mother". This epic action drama series combines ancient Chinese mythology with modern computer effects to create a colorful world where a wide assortment of gods battles against themselves, and the good triumphs in the end.

Yaoji, the younger sister of the Jade Emperor, has fallen in love with a mortal scholar named Yang Tianyou. They secretly get married and have three children, Jiao, Jian (Vincent Chiao), and Chan (Zhou Yang). This unlawful union of a mortal and an immortal angers the Jade Emperor, who sends his celestial army after them. Yaoji is imprisoned under the Peach Mountain, Tianyou and Jiao are killed, only Jian and Chan manage to escape. Jian undertakes training in martial arts and finally rescues Yaoji, but the Jade Emperor just won't let them go. He deploys 10 suns and Yaoji dies from the immense heat, then Jian kills the Jade Emperor's sons in revenge...

　　玉帝的妹妹瑤姬私婚凡間書生楊天佑，生下楊蛟、楊戩、楊嬋三個孩子。玉帝得知後，派天兵天將下界，殺了楊天佑和楊蛟，將瑤姬壓在桃山之下，楊戩和楊嬋在哪吒和天蓬元帥的幫助下僥倖逃脫。

　　楊戩拜師練武，劈開桃山救出母親，玉帝又派出十個兒子——十個太陽曬死瑤姬。楊戩悲憤難當，殺了九個太陽。玉帝無奈，採納了王母的建議，封楊戩為顯聖二郎真君，封楊嬋為三聖母。

　　孫悟空大鬧天宮，玉帝採納觀音的建議，來求助二郎神，二郎神並不想真正與孫悟空為敵，沒想到孫悟空不留口德，張嘴捅到了楊戩的痛處，楊戩終於幫天廷抓住了孫悟空。孫悟空逃離八卦爐，天廷再次來求助時，楊戩不再出手。

　　王母以為楊戩已經悟透了“情”關，又加上天廷的確缺少一個足夠有震懾力的司法天神，於是奏明玉帝，準備封楊戩為司法天神。

　　接受了天廷的任命。做了司法天神之後，楊戩憑藉手中的權利，幫助下界的人們逃離了天庭的無理責難，幫助八公主私嫁草原雄鷹巴特爾，幫助平反了許多冤案……而這時，三聖母因按捺不住寂寞，私配劉彥昌。身為司法天神的楊戩異常痛苦，不得已，親手把妹妹壓在了華山之下。從外甥沉香的身上，楊戩看到了自己的影子。他終於意識到，“情”沒有錯，錯在了天條。為了使大家都擁有愛的權利，為了一幕幕愛情悲劇不在重演，他終於動了修改天條的念頭……
