YesAsia Editorial Description

Two of Hong Kong cinema's greatest action luminaries, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, star in the 1982 classic period kung fu flick The Prodigal Son. Also directed by Sammo Hung, the film is an action-packed coming-of-age account of Foshan legend Leung Jan, master of the Wing Chun martial arts style. Considered one of the best traditional martial arts films of all time, The Prodigal Son is also one of the first films to truly showcase Wing Chun on screen, not to mention the high-kicking, fist-flying prowess of Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, Frankie Chan, and the late Lam Ching Ying, who is best known for the Mr. Vampire series. Recognized for Best Action Choreography at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards, The Prodigal Son features beautifully choreographed pure fighting sequences that are difficult to find in today's breed of action films.

Martial arts aficionado Leung Jan (Yuen Biao) has never lost a fight thanks to his wealthy protective parents who pay off all his opponents. When Leung Jan is easily beaten by visiting Chinese opera troupe artist Leung Yee Tai (Lam Ching Ying), he finally realizes his previous martial arts training has been all a sham. Leung Jan decides to join the opera troupe to learn real kung fu, but bloody tragedy soon befalls the troupe after Yee Tai inadvertently crosses some Manchu officials. Studying under Yee Tai and his friend Wong Wa Po (Sammo Hung), Leung Jan must master the art of Wing Chun so he can avenge the troupe and deliver justice where it's due.

This edition comes with a Sammo Hung interview, new and original trailers, and still gallery and slideshow.

20 out of 10 Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Truly one of the greatest martial arts movie ever crafted by his kungfu highness Sammo Hung. Yuen Biao, only in his second movie (his first was KnockAbout) and to be directed again by big brother Sammo. If you're a true martial arts fan you will not want to miss the powerful impact, fluid, flawless fighting sequences and delivery of the various wing chun movements. Injected with subtle comedy inbetween, you'll want to watch this movie at least once a month if you can.

Sammo delivered a true story of legendary Wing Chun master Leung Jan (Yuen Biao) and how he acquired that status. Lam Ching Ying also gave a performance of his lifetime as Leung Yee Tai. A rare moment when you get to see Lam Ching Ying in full operatic regalia playing a female lead in an operatic stageplay. Like his compatriots Sammo and Yuen Biao, his operatic background put him in good stead.

This digitally remastered copy (I didn't notice any difference) only had Sammo's interview and not that interesting. I'm glad I own the Collector's Edition where you have interviews with Yuen Biao, Frankie Chan, Sammo and Guy Lai. It's a pity Lam Ching Ying was not included. Get your hands on this one if you can.

A little trivial - Sammo reprise his role as Wong Wa Po (kungfu brother of Leung Yee Tai, aka sifu of Leung Jan) when Yuen Biao also reprise his role as Leung Jan in the TVB series Wing Chun (Nicholas Tse plays Leung Jan's son).

top five classic!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Yes, this movie is in my top five kung fu films of all time. The others are ( no particular order ): Drunken master 2, Legendary weapons of China, Fist of Legend and Magnificent Butcher. Now there's more flix that can be compared to those I just mentioned but Prodigal Son is so well crafted by Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao that you will want to watch this on all your short life!!! # 1 wing chung movie, # 2 Warriors two

Truly a classic! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Fifty years from now people still will be thrilling to director Samo Hung's "Prodigal Son."

What sets this movie apart from other action films is its interesting characters and engrossing story. Samo also provides the perfect balance of action and comedy, with Samo himself delivering his most hilarious role. Yuen Biao gives a finely calibrated performance as the clueless "street brawler" who dedicates himself to learning the art of wing chun. And Lam Ching Ying is a riveting presence throughout.

If I could change anything about this movie, I would make the nighttime attack on the opera troupe a bit less graphic. Gruesome images from that scene kept my stomach churning for hours.

Every kung fu fan must own this movie; it belongs in the pantheon of the greats. Very highly recommended by your humble servant.

Wing Chun Heaven!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Quite possibly the most authentic martial arts movie in existence! Yuen Biao is the best most underrated martial artist. Usually shadowed by his "brothers" Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, this movie clearly proves that he is more or just as worthy as both Jackie and Sammo. I personally believe he is the most acrobatic of all three. Hong Kong movie expert Bey Logan claims this movie as the "single best kung fu movie ever created." I honestly will not say I 100% completely agree with him, but for any person that even claims that they show an inkling of appreciation for martial arts movies that have not seen this yet..... SHAME ON YOU. Prodigal Son and its companion piece Warriors' Two, are the two best Wing Chun movies in existence.
