YesAsia Editorial Description
The Red Album is Stephy's fifth album and the first one titled without the sizzling "S" word. Released on the same day as her new movie Nobody's Perfect, the album features new songs "Chinese Cold Noodle", "Love and Jealousy", "Calmness", "Nursery Rhyme", "Typhoon", "Actually I Want...", "The Snow of Kyoto", and "Girly Red". Having established herself as a wildly popular singer and actress in Hong Kong, it is logical for Stephy to try to break into the Greater China market, and this album includes two Mandarin tracks, "Bitter Romance" and "Dreamlike", that may hint at even greater prospects for the former Cookies captain.
The Red Album is being released in two different cover designs.

Stephy’s Red - More Chanson/Ballad
|
Stephy is back and sporting her 1920’s Louise Brooks hair do on some of the pictures here. “The Red Album” though is mostly a ballad album with gentle melodies and more akin to ST’s album “Fantasy” than the previous “Stephilosophy”. Some of the songs sounding closer to Mandarin chanson than the usual pop sensibilities. There are three danceable songs with 1, 4 and 7, but they just tip over the mid tempo range and are quite moderate. To outline TRA. 1. (Upbeat) Chinese flavored dance-electronic number to get the album under way. Rhythmic, but a bit nutty! 2 (Ballad) A sweet Stephy ballad with a nice refrain, gentle melody. Sounds like a sunny morn. 3. (Ballad) With a little bit of nursery rhyme intro melody this is another gentle ballad that builds up onto its melody. 4. (Dance/Electronic) A moderate dance number with a female operatic synth ‘voice’ soon launching off into a latino/dance beat, with Stephy’s ballad type melody vocal line. Nice. 5. (Ballad) Sweet Stephy vocals to melt into again (sigh). Nice melody, but derivative and samey. 6. (Ballad) Strings opener into piano lead vocal. Lovely melody refrain and probably the catchiest of the ballads. Nice. 7. (Funky/Mid Tempo) A ballad intro which soon becomes a more rhythmic mid tempo ‘disco’ song. 8. (Ballad) another gentle ballad reminiscent of a HK Twins ballad. 9 and 10. (Ballads/Chanson). This last two are the Mandarin songs with are more chanson sound and each very similar in vein. Personally, I really love Stephy’s sweet voice, which is always a pleasure to listen to. But although “The Red Album” as a fine set of ballads with S’s calming and rewarding vocals, the album needed more energetic vivacity I thought. Stephy’s last CD “Stephilosophy” was a nice balanced affair, but here the emphasis is of the same sounding ballads motif. If Stephy’s “The Red Album” included 2 more catchy rhythms to counter balance, this would have been a far superior CD. Packaging is excellent! The two versions are also pictorially unique (I bought both MISS A and MISS B versions) as not only are the covers different, but the card photos inside are also different sets. So if you like Stephy’s photos you may wish to get both versions for the full picture sets. Albums are both postcard format with an attached brass fastener with the CD housed in a slotted pouch on the inside back cover. A nice album, but with a bit more song uoomph, this would have been a "Yeah!" instead of a "Hmmm" |
