In this 2004 television adaptation of the 1940's film classic, the ups and downs of one Shanghai family before, during and after the Japanese occupation of China are chronicled in intimate and sometimes devastating details. This is, to me, the best Chinese film I have ever watched for the last 10 years or so. The theme of the story is not new, describing China in the 1920's and 1930's with a mixture of old traditional values and modern day idess. On the top of all these was the country torn apart by the war with Japan and the complicated life in Shanghai where money, power and sex were all involved in the lives of a few people torn between love of family, lust for money and power and the brekdown of morals. There are a number of other films dealing more or less with the same topics but none had done so in such a vivid manner as this one. The dialogue was excellent the the acting subperb. My only comment is that Carina Lau is a bit too old and not so glamorous as the character of the girl she played. I highly recommend it. |
