Gael Garcia Bernal, continuing to show he is one of the most talented young actors in world cinema, takes a complex and potentially off-putting character and gives him a painfully identifiable core under the quirky affectations. The Science of Sleep makes for a charmingly innovative and romantic film, not to mention a resounding testament to all the amazing things one can do with cardboard.
Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a dreamer. Having recently moved from Mexico back to France, he works a dead-end job at a calendar company and lives a thoroughly mundane life. But in his dreams, everything takes on new colors. He is empowered to say and do things he doesn't do in reality. He hosts a musical television show about his life, philosophizing about people, memories, and experiences in frantic excitement. His dreams, however, often creep into reality, making it difficult for him and the people around him to figure out what's real and what's not. As he becomes increasingly obsessed with neighbor Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), his grasp on reality begins to slip away.
