Written and directed by Kong Ja Kwan, The Sex Film (a.k.a. Pornmaking for Dummies) is based on Kong’s own experience working in the porn industry for three years. This erotic comedy takes you step by step behind the scenes into the making of a pornographic film. Screened at the 2006 Seoul Independent Film Festival to rave audience reviews, The Sex Film made news when Click Entertainment, an adult production company, collaborated with major studio Cheongnyeon Film to release this controversial independent film. Capturing the harsh realities of pornographic filmmaking from grueling production schedule to public misconceptions as captured in real-life street interviews, The Sex Film offers the naked truth about an industry that is considered a major taboo in Korean society.
In the midst of a career drought, aspiring filmmaker Jin Gyu (Cho Jae Wan) responds to an advertisement placed by an adult film production company looking for a film director. The next day, Jin Gyu gets the call, and becomes the assistant director for a new and exciting film entitled All Nude Boy. He manages to work around the industry pet peeves, and even gets used to the nasty name-callings directed at him, simply brushing them off as occupational hazard. Meanwhile, his leading actress (Jeong So Jin) becomes smitten with him. Unlike the rest of the male staff who constantly drool over her naked body, Jin Gyu seems to show genuine passion for the film's artwork. It doesn't take too long for the porn star to get her wish and after a night of erotic odyssey, the two become inseparable. Then Jin Gyu gets the call of a lifetime. Impressed by his screenplay, a legitimate production company wants to meet with him. But as Jin Gyu finds out, not all is as simple as it seems.

A behind-the-scenes look at Korean porn

"The Sex Film" appears to be Korea's answer to Derek Yee's "Viva Erotica". However, while "Viva Erotica" ultimately proved to be a warmly human tale, "The Sex Film" takes a much more clinical look at the world of blue films. Arthouse filmmaker Jin Gyu (Cho Jae Wan) can't get financing for his latest film concept. With bills to pay and no income with which to pay them, he takes a job as an assistant director for a company that cranks out cheap blue movies like McDonald's cranks out hamburgers. These are movies that place a premium on nudity and simulated copulation, movies in which plausible stories and high quality production values take a backseat. Jin Gyu's days become a blur of production scheduling, hurried rehearsals, and haphazard filming, with Jin Gyu all the while chafing at the inattention to artistry. However, when a friend stabs him in the back on a legit film project, Jin Gyu reconciles himself to trying his best to make something of the blue films on which he works. After a night of heavy drinking with cast and crew, he winds up in bed with his company's primary starlet (Jeong So Jin), a dalliance Jin Gyu immediately regrets. The viewer suspects that Jin Gyu's empty dalliance with this porn starlet is representative of director Kong Ja Kwan's dalliance in the porn world. (One wishes we could have learned more about the starlet, who seems a lonely soul yearning for escape from her exploitative world.) Given its truncated 71 minute running length, "The Sex Film" lacks time for character development or big messages. Like porn films themselves, the emphasis here is on the nuts-and-bolts, the gritty details of making naughty movies. |
