Professional Review of "The Sexy Killer"

This professional review refers to The Sexy Killer
"Her sister's dead, and now she's going to make the pushers pay!" It could be a tag line for either exploitation classic: Pam Grier's breakthrough 1973 blaxploitation revenger, Coffy; or Chen Ping's 1976 Shaw Brothers programmer, Sexy Killer. Both movies feature a female lead whose little sister overdoses while being mauled like a cheap piece of meat by sex-crazed drug barons. Both women know the cops can't do a thing because those cats are on the drug lords' payroll, too. So both women use their bodacious bodies to wiggle up close to the nose candy merchants and then they kill them. And kill them. And kill them! Coffy harnessed Grier's previously little-seen talent for righteous anger and butt-kicking, had her show some skin, and became a grindhouse classic and the doorway to Grier's iconic status. Chen Ping doesn't have Grier's proclivity for rage, nor can she snarl her lines in the trademarked Grier manner, and Sexy Killer didn’t make her a bigger star (she was already an erotic movie big timer at Shaw), but it's still delightful exploitation fun.

Sun Chung would go on to make the fantastic Human Lanterns in 1983, and in Sexy Killer he's got a flair for composition and color, and he packs his movie with far more candy-colored sleaze (climaxing with the most perverted criminal kingpin ever put on film, courtesy of actor Wong Hap). His fights take place in hellish industrial landscapes where the giant stacks of concrete and steel feel like enormous teeth chewing up the bloody, vulnerable actors. There's a slow part in the middle when the cop (Yueh Hua - a big star at the time) gets his screentime, but when the movie focuses on Chen Ping, usually topless and wielding a shotgun in the fury-filled finale, the movie picks up the pace like a well-trained racehorse. And check out that groovy credit sequence.
