YesAsia Editorial Description

Andy Lau's "FOCUS: First Cuts" opened in Taiwan in February, 2006 with director Robin Lee's first feature-length movie The Shoe Fairy, starring Duncan Chow (Seven Swords) and sexy singer Vivian Hsu. The film captured the Best Art Director prize at the Golden Horse Awards, and has been selected for competition at Pusan International Film Festival and Tokyo Film Festival. It blends fantastic and realistic elements in an organic manner so as to convey a message about life. Robin Lee's colorful images charge the film with a dynamic and imaginative current, flowing underneath a fairy tale-like story. In the The Shoe Fairy, a girl who is obsessed with footwear (Vivian Hsu) meets her prince charming, known as the "Smiley Dentist" (Duncan Chow), and gets married with him. But will they live happily ever after like a prince and a princess?

When Dodo (Vivian Hsu) was a child, she could only stay at home listening to fairy tales instead of playing with other children for she could not walk. Since an operation which gave her back the ability to walk, Dodo has become addicted to beautiful shoes... Director Robin Lee made her Golden Horse winning short film "The Magical Wash Machine" in 2004, and her refreshing style continues to The Shoe Fairy, which has amazed many in Taiwan. Andy Lau, who backs the "FOCUS: First Cuts" project, serves as the narrator of The Shoe Fairy. The film is shot on High Definition (HD) technology and will be distributed across Asia just like the other 5 titles in this project.

Bright moral fable Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Shoe Fairy" is a quirky and visually vivid, but rather slight, moral tale about discovering that one finds true happiness not in self-involvement and materialism, but in sharing and caring for others. The film presents some arresting, often humorous, images, but falls short on dramatic tension and narrative drive. Indeed, forty-five minutes into watching this movie I was debating whether to continue or to find some other way to occupy my time. I stuck with the film and was rewarded with a satisfying resolution. Credit must be given to Vivian Hsu and Duncan Chow for the sincerity and simplicity with which they approached their characters. Recommended for its originality and message.
