The Songs, The Film And His Autobiography (2CD+DVD)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Andy Hui's latest album The Songs, The Film and His Autobiography is touted as the definitive compilation for the acclaimed Canto-pop singer, and that's not entirely marketing rhetoric. The 2CD, 36-track release boasts the most representative songs from his successful career spanning over 20 years, and that just covers about one-third of what it has to offer.

Disc 1, titled On Core Collection, features Andy's most popular hits like his breakout smash "For Men This Hurts the Most", power ballad "My Heaven My Song", early dance hits "Break the Iceberg" with mentor Anita Mui and "Red Hot Action La-La-La" with Aaron Kwok, and the classic romantic duet "Do You Actually Hold Me in Your Heart" with Sammi Cheng. Also included are three new songs in "All the Lovers Under the Sky" (the video of which is on the Bonus DVD), "Bottoms Up", and "You Catch a Cold, I Catch a Cold Too". Disc 2 (On His Own Collection) features Andy's own favorite works with some edgier materials thrown in, such as "Loving You Through the Night", "The Obscure Object of Desire", "The Grand Love", "Paradise Lost", and the Deanie Ip duet "How Can I Not Love Him".

Perhaps the only things that can top The Songs are The Film and His Autobiography. The Bonus DVD houses Andy's directorial debut in the 30-minute short film "The Magic Cube Nerd" (starring 6wing of FAMA and Jo Kuk, written by Erica Li, and lensed by Herman Yau), as well as a 40-minute retrospective special on Andy.

Stick to what you do best!
When pop singers do best-of albums, nine times out of ten they are a bunch of selected songs served with bonus music videos and/or concert footage. Andy Hui shows us other possibilities with his latest career retrospective compilation The Songs, the Film, and His Autobiography, offering a side dish that is no less, if not more, mouth-watering than the main course.

This is not to say the songs are not enticing - they are anything but. Having been in the business for over 20 years and responsible for a long list of big hits of the 90s and onwards, Andy has amassed a huge repertoire on a par with those of the Four Heavenly Kings. The distinctions between the two CDs titled On Core Collection and On His Own Collection are not automatically clear, but the songs that are picked for inclusion here are all meat and no fat. And the three new numbers? They all sound vintage Andy Hui, and they are a savory appetizer to what he can still offer.

But to many fans, the Film and the Autobiography are the main draw of this package. Andy has branched into acting many years ago, appearing in numerous films from Wong Jing's Future Cops to Iwai Shunji's Swallowtail Butterfly. Truth be told, a brilliant singer no doubt, Andy wasn't that much of an actor. His acting always screamed hammy, although his recent acting gig in Ivy Ho's Claustrophobia did seem more natural.

So how did he fare in his much touted first outing behind the scene, the short film Ant on the Cube included in the bonus DVD? It was better than expected (note: there wasn't much expectation to begin with). Sure, cinematographer Herman Yau and screenwriter Erica Lee helped, but Andy's directorial effort was driven by an urge to tell a story, and it shows. For a starting director, that perhaps counts more than his or her storytelling skills.

Here, Andy tells us what happens when communication fails. A TV anchor (played by Jo Kuk) wakes up in a creepy locked room made to look like the interior of a Rubik's cube. Swearing and screaming for help, she soon comes to recall that she was kidnapped there. The one who did that was a weird guy (6wing of FAMA) who is obsessed with the 80s plaything and prefers talking to his pet ant to going outdoors. Now, why did he kidnap her? What does he want to do with her? Can she escape? The film raises as many questions as it answers, but bear in mind that this is more a psychological drama than the usual suspense thriller, therefore, audience participation in finishing the story is perhaps intended.

The Retrospect, the other half of the bonus DVD, is a collage of celebrities (including Andy himself) revealing anecdotes about the singer in certain episodes of his career, thereby giving us more insight into him as a person. The amusing interviews are interspersed with Andy singing some of his landmark songs in lovely acoustic versions with his magnetic vocals - that, not acting or directing, is what he does best, and why we admire him in the first place.
