YesAsia Editorial Description

Twelve years ago Siu Ho (Deep Ng) lost both his home and family when a truck crashed into his house. The sole survivor of the accident, Siu Ho knows only pain, anger, and aggression as he grows up. For him, existence is a kind of punishment until the day he meets a man who shows him a new life. Private Soldier, as he calls himself, takes in those abandoned by society, building a new community of hope within an outskirts walled village. Under the care of social worker Mei Ting (Mandy Chiang), Siu Ho finds both his health and heart healing but his presence is less than welcomed by local gangster Ah Wang (Kenny Kwan) who sees Ho as a challenger. The village is thrown further into violent asunder when a notorious triad (Hsieh Cheng Jun) arrives to hide out.

Directed by Tony Leung Hung Wah (PTU File: Death Trap), The Sparkle in the Dark brings a Hong Kong idol cast to Taiwan for a different take on the triad genre. Deep Ng (New Police Story) and Kenny Kwan (6 AM), in a notable departure from his boy-next-door image, star as rival small-time gangsters, and Mandy Chiang (Whispers and Moans) seals the EEG deal as a social worker who helps the troubled leads find their way. Taiwan actors Gina Lin, Ben Lee, and Hsieh Cheng Jun, best known as the baddie from triad idol drama The Outsiders, make up the supporting cast. Inspired by true events in Taiwan, The Sparkle in the Dark approaches its message of social concern and personal redemption with well-meaning frankness, giving this small triad drama an extra boost of realism.

True Female Spirit Melt Men’s Aggressions Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Although not the best movie of its type, due to its merit and concern for underprivileged beginnings it’s really hard to discount. A well-meaning film, routed from harsh reality and having quite a blunt nature to its script, the impact of teenage angst and violence is felt and understood. For me a film sitting somewhere between Korean film “Bad Movie” about teenage street delinquency and HK’s own “Besieged City”, which dealt with similar problems of drug abuse and teenage criminal gangs. Here though the contrast is quite startling. For you have EEG stable mates Kenny Kwan, Deep NG and the hauntingly beautiful Mandy Chiang slumming alongside triad violence, brutal social attitudes and volatile aggression.

Siu Ho (Deep NG), Ah Wang (Kenny) and Mei Ting (Mandy) are placed at a rehabilitation center in Taiwan, with Mei Ting a co-worker helping Siu Ho’s condition of crime, asthma and a tragic past. Mei Ting’s own life had once been servitude to prostitution, but she escapes to the center to build her life up again. Here she helps Sui Ho (who falls in love with her) and Ah Wang who both try to learn about compassionate values instead of destructive behaviour; a new positive ‘air to breath’ in bringing their lives to a more valued bonding spirit and a procure for stimulating happiness. But violent triad gang members cause problems at the rehabilitation centre, with Ah Wang holding a terrible resentment to one of the gang members.

This film shows at least the hard-hitting circumstance and difficult in understandings why certain people behave erratically. The dysfunctional and exasperated helplessness that encroach on underprivileged young people, causing insecure restless states of mind. Siu Ho and Ah Wang both lose their parents, one to a house disaster and the latter to suicide, leaving them at the mercy of crime and abuse. This fuels their resentments and anger which is difficult to fully see through their blighted and violent young lives here. Kenny, Deep and Mandy immerse themselves in the most contrasting movie to their image. Although not as evident with Mei Ting (was the ‘Rock Royalty’ Tee ironic here), Mandy as performed outsiders again as a prostitute in “Whispers and Moans”, and far from her pretty pop star image. (Give Mandy more chance she can be very good). Kenny and Deep NG are also decently convincing as the troubled boys. A film worth seeing. But "Besieged City" is the one I'd certainly recommend.
