Cathay Organisation first landed in Hong Kong in 1953 to set up International Films, both a distribution and a production company. They initially produced Cantonese films and hired renowned Cantonese filmmaker Zuo Ji (Tso Kea) to direct a series of Cantonese productions for them. Zuo, known for his meticulous style and serious attitude, made some of the best films of his career with the full support of International, of which The Splendor of Youth is undoubtedly one. Adapted from the popular novel by Zheng Hui (who also wrote Our Sister Hedy) and set against the world of the upper class socialites, the film tells how the life of a beautiful schoolgirl is almost ruined by a villainous playboy. The film featured an ensemble cast and the shoot lasted almost twelve months, something almost unprecedented in the Cantonese cinema of the time. A high-powered melodrama, The Splendor of Youth managed to rise above the average contemporary Cantonese films and make itself a near-classic of the genre.

Over-the-top melodrama

It is hard to imagine that the story so ham-handedly told in this film comes from the pen of the novelist who wrote the ingeniously subtle "Our Sister Hedy". "The Splendor of Youth" is anything but subtle. It is an over-the-top, absurd near-parody of a melodrama. For most of the film, "The Splendor of Youth" plods along at what seems like a snail's pace. The movie looks and feels very old-fashioned, like an American movie from the early 1930s, when people were still adjusting to the novelty of making "talkies". The acting, particularly of the lead actress, can seem almost robotic. What might have been an interestingly lurid story line spins out of control in the movie's last 45 minutes. Here's the gist of the story: A woman with three daughters loses her husband at a relatively young age. He leaves the family nothing but an expensive villa and loads of debts. The woman wants to maintain her luxurious lifestyle. In order to do so, she throws parties each night at which she prostitutes her three young daughters to the community's big shots in exchange for cash. One of the daughters brings her college friend into the home to live. Unbeknownst to the friend, she too will be prostituted to the big shots. In the closing minutes, in very short order, the innocent friend is raped while in a drunken stupor, is rescued from a second attempted rape, then tries and fails to commit suicide, one daughter contracts syphilis and goes blind, one daughter dies while trying to abort her illegitimate unborn child, one daughter flees with all the family's money, the mother goes insane, and the lead lothario falls down a staircase to his death. These tragedies come at the viewer so fast and furious at the end that, as ridiculous as it all is, you keep watching to see what inane horror will happen next. A final note: This film has the most distracting musical soundtrack I've ever encountered. The filmmakers continually insert music (often snippets of familiar classical pieces) that is much too loud and often inappropriate for the action being depicted. I have rated this movie as highly as this because it almost is so bad that it's good. Almost, but not quite. Your humble servant cannot recommend "The Splendor of Youth" to anyone. |
