In the 1960s, MP & GI (Motion Picture & General Investment), the production company behind The Story of Three Loves, and Shaw Brothers were fierce competitors in the Hong Kong motion picture industry. On more than one occasion, both studios would embark on the same story and compete to bring it to the screen. The Story of Three Loves was one of such examples. Based upon a hugely popular romance novel by Shanghai writer Zhang Henshui, the film tells the intriguing relationship between a rich Beijing college boy and three young women, a street artist, an upper class lady and a teahouse songstress. Widely considered to be the better film, this MP & GI version features a saucy performance by Roy Chiao, who plays an evil warlord lusting after the beauty of one of the women.

Can't wait to see Part II... Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
After watching Part I of this terrific melodrama, I am very eager to see Part II. The cast is great, the movie looks good (although it clearly did not have the big budget that Shaw Bros. lavished on its comparable films), and the story is very involving. Lots of terrific songs from Ge Lan! Qiao Hong is a revelation as the overbearing warlord. Very highly recommended.

Another GREAT performance from a GREAT CAST Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
STORY OF THREE LOVES was the third movie that BOTH
CATHAY and SHAW had filmed in a frenzied competitive
move to produce movies based on the same story. Nowadays it is really fun to see which studio made the
better of the 3 sets of duplicate movies. For me, CATHAY has always have a better cast because performers like Ge Lan, Lin Cui and Roy Chiao are just
too special there are no equivalent talents over in the
Shaw stable. Specially Ge Lan, she gave another"tour-de
-force" performance playing dual roles. Roy Chiao was
equally good as the arch villain warlord and Lin Cui and Wang Yin gave their usual solid performances proving their stellar stature in that era. One hopes that Cathay will release their other triumphant
show "Magic Lamp" soon so fans can relish the great
jobs that Ge Lan, Lin Cui and Yu Min did.
