アイオワ州に住む73歳のアルヴィン・ストレイトは、娘のローズと2人暮らし。ある日彼のもとに、76歳になる兄、ライルが心臓発作で倒れたと電話が入る。2人は10年来仲たがいしていたが、アリヴィンはこれを機に和解しようとライルとの再会を決心する。ところがアルヴィンは運転免許を持っておらず、唯一の交通手段は時速8キロしか出ないトラクターだけ。それでも「兄と昔のように星空の下で話がしたい」という想いだけで、560キロ離れたウィスコンシンへと向かう。車なら1日で行ける道のりを、彼はたったひとりで6週間かけて旅することになる…。
あのデビッド・リンチ監督がN.Yタイムズに掲載された実話をモチーフに、"ストレート"に描いた心温まるヒューマン・ドラマ。1999年のカンヌ国際映画祭で上映されて大喝采を浴び、全世界のマスコミをはじめ多くの映画ファンの感動を呼んだ話題作。ニューヨーク批評家協会賞主演男優賞、撮影賞を受賞。また主演のリチャード・ファーンズワースはこの作品でアカデミー賞にもノミネートされた。
