YesAsia Editorial Description

Brace yourself for a hilarious action-filled ride with The Sword of Alexander! Based on a serial story by Yumemakura Baku, The Sword of Alexander (a.k.a. Taitei no Ken) is a rollicking period fantasy adventure, complete with ninjas, warriors, magical weapons, and a couple of aliens. With a host of colorful characters, impressive CG visuals, and genres colliding left and right, the film provides a sensory overload of comedy, action, and fun. Director Tsutsumi Yukihiko, last seen quietly inducing tears with Memories of Tomorrow, teams up again with Abe Hiroshi, the star of his Trick films, and puts the actor's natural comic presence to good use. Hasegawa Kyoko (Ai no Rukeichi) plays the film's precocious princess, alongside a supporting cast that includes Kudo Kankuro (Thirteen Steps), Endo Kenichi (The Sinking of Japan), and Kuroki Meisa (Under the Same Moon).

Free-spirited wandering swordsman Yorozu Genkuro (Abe Hiroshi) easily towers over everyone with his tall, lanky stature and all-mighty "Sword of Alexander". His larger-than-life sword is one of three sacred objects carved from orichalcum, an otherworldly metal that brings its owner superhuman powers. He who possess all three objects will rule the world, and Genkuro is on a quest to find the other two items - a cross and a dagger - and a man worthy of wielding such powers. On the road, he rescues and befriends the lovely Princess Mai (Hasegawa Kyoko), who is on the run from the Tokugawa, and her scrappy ninja bodyguard (Kudo Kankuro). This turns out to be the beginning of a myriad of troubles for Genkuro as there are a plentitude of Tokugawa assassins and warriors, not to mention an alien-possessed bear hunter, all out to get the princess.

Professional Review of "The Sword of Alexander (AKA: Taitei No Ken) (DVD) (Japan Version)"

    February 6, 2008

This professional review refers to The Sword Of Alexander (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
Oh, my. I need to see more from Sword of Alexander director Tsutsumi Yukihiko and I need to see it now. This could easily be viewed as the Japanese equivalent of Big Trouble In Little China, a very deliberate cult film that features a-list talent not slumming exactly, but absolutely reveling in every bit of goofy sci-fi, martial arts and fantasy imagery that stoked their collective imaginations as children. And, believe me, when you're a child in Japan, there's a lot of crazy stuff to choose from. A giant man with a gianter sword, rival aliens possessing human bodies, a villain who can transform himself into a swarm of hungry locusts, cult icon Riki Takeuchi in his most gloriously over the top performance in years, and a mad dash for a trio of mystical artifacts that will grant their holder the ultimate power - Sword of Alexander has it all. Plus a guy with a bear's arm for no particular reason other than that it's fun.

Hiroshi Abe stars as Genkuro Yorozu, a positively enormous, half black man wielding a ridiculously large claymore - a type of two handed sword - that once belonged to Alexander the Great. A disarmingly simple and naive man, Genkuro approaches the world with the sort of wonder you'd see from a child, which seems like it should be at odds with the sort of destructive force he can become when he wishes, but hey: kids like to break stuff, too. Genkuro's sword, as it turns out, is one of three mystical artifacts made of a mysterious outer space alloy and legend has it that whoever can gather all three artifacts together will wield the greatest power in the universe. Genkuro doesn't much seem to care about wielding the ultimate power - hell, he doesn't even care about washing his kimono - but apparently he's the only one.

The Tokugawa shogun has enslaved countless peasants, forcing them to dig for the other two artifacts. A rival princess - the last of her line - and her clan of ninja bodyguards - the key one of whom is played by Ping Pong and Zebraman screenwriter Kankuro Kudo - are desperate to unite the three to preserve their line. A mysterious, strangely effeminate samurai is lurking around the outskirts of the action. The supernaturally powered Arachnid Clan of ninjas - Monk Grin (Riki Takeuchi), the aforementioned locust man, and a lusty woman with ominous hair - want all three to make themselves tyrants over all Japan. And then, of course, there are the battling aliens who crash to earth and take possession of host bodies each hoping to get the artifacts and destroy the other, thus putting an end to a thousand year old war. Yes, this movie has a full on space battle despite being primarily a period set fantasy film. It also has a love scene in which Genkuro and Princess Mai - possessed by an alien spirit - do the deed by putting their fingers in each other's ears. It's that sort of film.

I'm going to appropriate a line here that fellow Twitch-er Canfield once applied to another film: The Sword Of Alexander feels like a film made by very talented people who sat down and drew up a list of everything they wanted to see in a film when they were children and then made that film. Super powered heroes, ridiculously over the top bad guys, an epic quest, gravity defying martial arts, space ships, and more, more, more. There's considerably more than just the kitchen sink in here and it's gloriously goofy fun. Very highly recommended.

Wild cinematic thrill-ride Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Sword of Alexander" is crazy, action-packed, hilarious, rollicking fun. The story involves three objects that have hurtled to earth from outer space which have unstoppable powers when used together. Abe Hiroshi plays Genkuro, a heroic larger-and-stinkier-than-life character who possesses one of the three objects, the Sword of Alexander.

Genkuro uses the mighty blade to rescue Princess Mai (Hasegawa Kyoko), who happens to be possessed by a weird liquid space creature. Kuroki Meisa plays an impossibly beautiful swordsman who occasionally intervenes with mysterious, but apparently noble, motives. The cast includes a wide assortment of ninja warriors possessing outlandish abilities and mythical beasts unlike anything I've seen before.

In short, "Sword of Alexander" is a gloriously chaotic film in which the filmmakers' imaginations simply were allowed to run wild. However, the movie, as presented on this DVD, has two significant flaws. First, it has been badly chopped into a full-screen format; this movie definitely should have been presented in widescreen. Second, because it is based upon an open-ended novel -- a novel which has no end -- the makers of this movie had to concoct their own ending. Unfortunately, the ending they chose is a terrible anticlimax.

Nonetheless, I recommend the film very highly for those, like me, who are thrilled to revel in its outlandish story, goofy sense of humor, bizarre characters, and cheesy special effects. "Sword of Alexander" is a hoot!
