남극의 미국 기지에 개 한마리가 달려들어온다. 그리고 그 개를 쫓던 광기어린 사람들의 모습이 나타나고 그들은 공포심에 젖은 미국 탐사팀에 의해 사살되고 만다. 그들의 공포와 광기에 절은 모습에 놀란 사람들은 그들이 노르웨이 대원임을 알고는 기지를 방문하는데 노르웨이 대원 전원이 모두 죽었다는 사실을 발견한다. 묘한 공포심이 기지를 감쌀 무렵 노르웨이 탐사팀에 의해 쫓겨온 개가 끔찍한 괴물로 변신한다. 그것의 정체는 생물체의 모습을 그대로 복사해내는 외계인. 곧 탐사원들 중 한 명이 그 외계 생명체에 감염되었을지 모른다는 의구심이 일어나면서 모두 서로를 믿지 못하게 되고, 한사람씩 괴물로 변하기 시작하자 긴장감이 극도에 이른다.

존 W. 캠벨 주니어(John W. Campbell Jr.)의 원작 ‘Who Goes There?’을 바탕으로 1951년에 만들어진 동명의 명작을 존 카펜터 감독 식의 호러를 가미하여 리메이크한 공포 영화의 컬트. 1982년작이라고 하기에 놀라울 정도로 환상적인 특수효과가 압권이다. 커트 러셀, 윌포드 브림리, 키스 데이빗 등이 출연한다.
