It also anticipates many of the themes and attitudes of post-Tarantino crime cinema with remarkable prescience.

A heist gone wrong

"The Triple Cross" is a great, gawdy action spectacular, the first of Fukasaku Kinji's films I've seen that is imbued with a wild sense of humor. Kanzaki (Hagiwara Kenichi), Shiba (Sonny Chiba), and Imura (Ishibashi Renji) are a trio of successful robbers assisted by their lovely getaway driver Misato (Takigawa Yumi). They team up with blonde-maned Kadomachi (Kimura Kazuya) for one last big heist. But hooking up with Kadomachi proves to be a fatal mistake. First, the heist nets only one-quarter of the money they expected, leading to a deadly fight among the robbers. Second, it turns out that Shiba's young girlfriend Mai (Oginome Keiko) is a double-agent; she actually is Kadomachi's girlfriend and has set up the original trio. Kadomachi and Mai end up with all the loot ... and with the police, a bizarre loan shark, and Kanzaki all hot on their heels. Director Fukasuku Kinji keeps the action coming fast and furious, fed by heavy metal music and a steady diet of bold and colorful characters. For fans of action cinema, "The Triple Cross" must not be missed. This film is a blast! |
