The Twin Swords (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

A sequel to the box-office success Red Lotus Temple (1965), The Twin Swords (1966) continues the story of the original about a couple (Jimmy Wang and Chin Ping) trying to save the Red Lotus Temple. These two films marked the rise of two very important figures in Hong Kong cinema: Chang Cheh and Jimmy Wang. Chang Cheh joined the Shaw Brothers in the early 1960s as a playwright. His directorial debut The Butterfly Chalice (1965) was not entirely successful. The Shaw Brothers thus asked Chang to collaborate with cinematographer-turned-director Hsu Cheng Hung on Red Lotus Temple and The Twin Swords, and these two well-made titles have prepared Chang for his later success with the 1967 movie One-armed Swordsman, also starring Jimmy Wang. As for Jimmy Wang, he quickly rose to fame with his performance in this series before establishing a prominent image of the masculine swordsman. The success of this second episode The Twin Swords led to a third episode to the Red Lotus Temple series, titled The Sword And The Lute.

With a cast list that includes Jimmy Wang Yu, Chin Ping, Lo Lieh and Ivy Ling Po, you can expect lots of hard-edged action in The Twin Swords. Jimmy Wang Yu, the star of such martial arts hits like One-Armed Swordsman, plays Kwei Wu who happens upon a kidnapping with his wife Kan Lien-chu (Chin Ping) at the Red Lotus Temple. Kan sends Kwei to go for reinforcements while she stays to fight the kidnappers. Fortunately, the mysterious Scarlet Maid (Ivy Ling Po) is surreptitiously helping her.

Exciting sequel to "Red Lotus Temple" Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "The Twin Swords", Jin Lian Zhu (Chin Ping) and Gui Wu (Jimmy Wang Yu) are on their own, having left the Jin family of martial artists and eloped against the wishes of Lian Zhu's parents. The evil Red Lotus Clan stages a false kidnapping to lure them to the Red Lotus Temple, where they capture Lian Zhu. Gui Wu returns to the Jin family to seek their help, but -- stirred up by Jin Du Zhuang (Lo Lieh), who has yearned for Lian Zhu's affections -- they don't believe Gui Wu and suspect the worse of him. Du Zhuang goes to scout out the Red Lotus Temple, when he doesn't return, the Jin family heads to the temple to seek revenge. Intervening to lend help is the Red Maiden (Ling Po).

"The Twin Swords" looks great and tells an exciting, action-packed tale. The film plays like a violent fairy tale in which anything can and does happen, including a talking bird, an evil lute, and little Fung Bo-Bo slinging the vaunted Fish Intestines Sword. Unfortunately, the movie shifts gears in its final fifteen minutes and becomes too talky. Nevertheless, this colorful, swashbuckling tale is richly entertaining and I recommend it highly.

Glory Days of the genre Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Twin Swords is a great movie not only because it showcases actors and actresses who become legends in other movies as well as this one, but a creative storyline. I've seen "Story in Red Temple", and "The sword and the Lute." These three tales are so good you could only wish a series to come out. I give Twin Swords great praise for its continuity and Martial morality tale.
