YesAsia Editorial Description

This subtle and bucolic Korean film is "dedicated to all grandmas" by its director Jeong-hyang Lee. The story concerns bratty, selfish seven-year-old Sang-Woo (Seung-Ho Yoo) who is sent out into the mountains to live with his ancient, mute, partially deaf grandmother (Eul-Boon Kim) while his stressed-out single mom looks for work back in the city. Angry and resentful, the boy is bored with his new life of simple food, sleeping on the floor in a one-room hut, and having nowhere to buy batteries for his dying handheld video game. Eventually Grandma's humble patience and unconditional love get through to him, and there's plenty of space for comic vignettes and moving moments of stillness along the way. The boy's hyper world of candy and toys contrasts with grandma's slow, natural environment and allows for contemplation on our rapidly changing culture. This is the second film from Ms. Lee, whose cast consists largely of inexperienced locals from the village where she shot the film. Eul-Boon Kim is a particularly amazing discovery as the grandmother; she had never even seen a movie before being cast.

"...Lee has invested a great deal of autobiographical currency in the film -- emotionally if not literally -- and the result is appropriately resonant..." - Wade, Major (Box Office Critic), Box Office, 11/01/2002

"...[Kim Eul-boon] is a real natural..." - Lisa, Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 11/22/2002

"...THE WAY HOME is simplicity itself, and Lee is alert to the details and incidents of everyday life to sustain the film with wryly amusing observations and much affection....A loving little film of considerable appeal..." - Kevin, Thomas (Film critic), Los Angeles Times, 11/15/2002

Professional Review of "The Way Home (US Version)"

June 27, 2007

This professional review refers to The Way Home ....(Hong Kong Version)

The Way Home is the second highest grossed movie in Korea in 2002. Without a recognizable cast and a running time that lasts under 90 minutes, one may wonder, what is so special about this movie?

The plotline is very simple, it is all about this seven year old kid and his seventy seven years old grandmother. Sang-woo (Yoo Seung-Ho) stays in her grandmother's home in the rural area for two months. A spoiled kid from the city is forced to dwell in a place that has no television or any entertainment, you can expect how hard it is for him to adapt to this new environment. Moreover, his grandmother is mute, which makes it harder for them to communicate. The theme of the story is obvious, it aims at telling us the importance of love through the interaction of the kid and his granny. Not only should we value our elder family members, we should also learn how to appreciate the beauty of nature. The austere and primitive life in the rural area may seem dull at first glance, but if you try to sit back and relax, you will be able to discover the preciousness of nature and simplicity .

Seriously speaking, the subject matter of this movie is not very peculiar. It has been used in many mainland films before. The script also lacks any dramatic tension, as well as an ending that is more or less predictable. What is good about this film is the authentic depiction of the life of the characters. Different from its tear-jerking counterparts, this movie does not contain any hackneyed plot twist at all. Director Lee Jung-hyang employs a documentary style to survey the two protagonists. Routine activities like cooking and hair trimming are well captured that stir up some funny moments. The most important thing is that, you won't feel that the actors are trying to "act out" their parts, they just perform so natural and real. It is this freshness and authenticity that move the audience gradually.

The two protagonists of this film, Kim Eul-boon and Yoo Seung-ho, are non-professional actors. Fortunately, their inexperience do not hinder them to perform brilliantly, especially Kim Eul-boon, her stony face suits the role of the mute grandmother perfectly. The only part that bothers me is the behavior of the grandson. What he does is quite annoying, but Yoo Seung-ho is really a beloved kid, when you see him smiling innocently, you will forgive all his mischief.

Apparently, The Way Home does not have a very dramatic story, but I would not be too surprised to see that it was welcomed by the audience in Korea, as Korean audiences are always more receptive than Hong Kong, America or even Japanese viewers. Perhaps Korea is few of the mainstream film markets in the world that are still not fully colonized by Hollywood productions yet, or is it?

The HK version of the DVD, which was released before the Korean version, is excellent. Similar to the DVD of My Sassy Girl, Edko includes a lot of bonus materials like trailers and making of featurette on the disc, and they are generous enough to subtitle some of the bonus materials.

Cool guy(s) - Kim Eul-boon

Great family movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
In "The Way Home...", a stressed-out single mom drops her bratty seven year old son off for the summer months with an elderly grandmother he doesn't know. The spoiled city kid is like a fish out of water in his grandmother's rustic country home. And his mute, bent-over grandmother soon becomes the object of his seemingly ceaseless wrath. The good-hearted granny just lets the kid's constant abuse roll off of her, as she makes every sacrifice in her attempts to make him happy. Will she finally succeed in winning the boy's heart? And will the boy ever be able to befriend the country kids who he treats as bumpkins?

"The Way Home...", for American viewers, has the feel of a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, telling a sentimental tale of a grandmother's unconditional love and of a rebellious boy learning valuable life lessons. It proves to be a very involving formula, as the audience wonders whether the child ever will come to the end of his recalcitrance. This is the kind of warm-hearted family story that creates an indelible impression and holds important messages for us all. It clearly was the inspiration for the equally excellent Japanese film, "Gabai Granny". "The Way Home..." is a wonderful, engaging movie for the whole family.

A very thouchy movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
They played this movie on TV this afternoon and I was hooked till the end. The plot is quite simple and the number of actors is probably only 5 or so. However, this is a very, very touchy movie. In the movie you will see how difficult life can be for some people; and yet they face it gracefully. The lady who plays the deaf/mute old lady is very impressive. Is she actually deaf/mute in real life? Now I would like to order this DVD to add to my collection.
