Based on Nashiki Kaho's award-winning children's novel, The Witch of the West is Dead is another outstanding work from acclaimed filmmaker Nagasaki Shunichi, the director of Kuro-obi, Heart, Beating in the Dark, and Christmas in August. The subtly moving film flips gently through pastoral pastimes, adolescent insecurities, and coming-of-age rites to portray one unforgettable summer for a young girl and her grandmother. Raised in Japan and fluent in Japanese, veteran American actress Sachi Parker appears in her first Japanese film as the witchly grandmother who quietly guides her granddaughter, played by newcomer Takahashi Mayu. Ryo (Canary, Casshern) completes the multi-generation triangle as the mother.

After refusing to go to school, troubled 13-year-old Mai (Takahashi Mayu) gets sent to the countryside to live with her eccentric British grandmother for the summer. Granny, who calls herself the "Witch of the West", agrees to teach her granddaughter witchcraft. Their lessons include how to grow herbs, how to make jam, and, most importantly, how to make decisions by oneself. What starts as an idyllic summer, however, ends as a bittersweet memory.
