　　清道光年間，廣東花縣有一富戶，戶主陳鴻妻早亡，子至賢不孝，陳鴻便將希望寄託在繼室繆蘭身上。皇天不負有心人，蘭生子夢吉，自幼聰敏。橋王荒唐鏡雖是他的授業老師，但卻經常被他戲弄。一天，吉又作弄老師，卻自食其果而受傷，鏡以為是自己把吉弄傷，遂一走了之。吉自此變得沉默自閉，鴻乃將吉送進私塾讀書。

　　吉在書塾內認識了名叫柳媚的小女孩。十幾年間，感到無比幸福的吉漸漸痊癒。同時，鏡與徐艷霞也重返花縣，鏡知道吉己痊癒，總算放心。賢設計搶奪家產，鴻因而一病不起，臨終時將產業盡歸夢吉所有。
