The Wolves (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

A visually stunning and elaborate Yakuza (gangster) film set in the late 1920's. While the Yakuza of the 20's still dressed in robes and carried swords, and the film is reminiscent of the world of the samurai, there is an occasional bowler hat or bit of newsreel film to remind the viewer that we are in the changing world of 20th century Japan.

"...A most peculiar mixture of stylized prettiness and blood and gore....I doubt that you'll be bored..." - Vincent, Canby (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 08/31/1982

"The Wolves" is a complex and involving tale of corruption and turf wars among the Yakuza in 1920s Japan. The film features a fine ensemble cast headlined by Nakadai Tatsuya. A territorial dispute between rival gangs explodes into violence, resulting in multiple deaths and the imprisonment of several of the gangsters. Four years later, amid the death of the old emperor and the enthronement of the new emperor, an amnesty is declared that sets the gangsters free. They emerge from prison to find that the rival gangs have reconciled. The reconciliation will be sealed by the marriage of the leader of one gang to the daughter of the deceased head of the rival gang. But simmering tensions between the two clans remain and something about the marriage just doesn't smell right. This premise sets the stage for a film filled with tension and intrigue. While director Gosha Hideo indulgently overplays some scenes for dramatic impact, he was a master at orchestrating complex films of this nature and he does not disappoint here. Indeed, "The Wolves" boils to an awesome, action-packed climax. This one is a keeper!
