This documentary tells a unique story of Eastern and Western cultures merging within the world of professional basketball. Yao Ming, the seven-feet-six-inches-tall athlete who is a star in his native China, was the first pick of the Houston Rockets for the 2002-2003 NBA draft. Feeling pressure from his Chinese audience to succeed in the US, while simultaneously facing the scrutiny of the American basketball establishment, Yao meets significant challenges during his first year in the NBA. Narrated by Yao's 28-year-old interpreter, Colin Pine, the film shows how Yao and Colin navigate the turbulent ups and downs of American-style celebrity. Meanwhile, Colin also struggles with the complexity of translating NBA terminology into Mandarin Chinese. Despite frustrating setbacks and missteps, both Yao and Colin handle their new environments with aplomb and humor. Learning as they go, both become highly competent at what they do, finding ways to help each other. As a result, THE YEAR OF THE YAO is not only about basketball, it is also about the strong friendship that develops between these two strangers from totally different corners of the world.

Dissapointing version, good film Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
First of I didn't know what to expect when purchasing a "china version" film. But it came just as I expected, cheap print on the box, dvd looked like something I could make on my own computer, dvd5 as well. Lesson learnt: Never buy china version dvd's again.

Cosmetic failures I can live with, but the quality of the film and sound was not any better, sound was 2.0, and film was shot very poorly. Now I am not sure if it is the transfer or the source, but I would assume it was the transfer judging from the menu, title screens, lack of turning off the subtitles, let alone changing the subtitles from chinese to english was not available.

In summary, this dvd is no different to if I was to download some low quality divx off the internet and watch that instead. By the way the film is very insightful and a definite must watch for all Yao Ming fans.
