YesAsia Editorial Description
Director Gordon Chan helms The Yuppie Fantasia, a hilarious and well-observed modern comedy starring Lawrence Cheng and Carol "Dodo" Cheng! Leung Foon (Lawrence Cheng) is an ad agency employee whose marriage to Ann (Carol Cheng) is hitting the skids after eight years. He considers making a break from his wife, and his timing couldn't be more fortuitous. His new boss is the gorgeous Mrs. Lam (Cherie Chung), who takes a shine to him. Leung Foon also has ex-girlfriend Jenny (Elizabeth Lee) to contend with, and office politics and intrigue aplenty. Will he discover that the grass truly is greener on the other side, or will he decide that the covenant of marriage is the way to go? An insightful comedy about love and marriage in modern Hong Kong, The Yuppie Fantasia was a popular hit during its 1989 theatrical run, and is one of many collaborations between Lawrence Cheng and top comedienne Carol Cheng. The Yuppie Fantasia is also known by the alternate title Diary of a Small Man, and was followed by a 1990 sequel called Brief Encounter in Shinjuku.

Good cast in solid romantic comedy
|
"The Yuppie Fantasia" is a pleasing comedy that strives for social commentary but settles for solid entertainment. Its somewhat piecemeal story is about Leung Foon (Lawrence Cheng), a junior ad agency exec, who separates from his workaholic financial analyst wife Ann (Carol Cheng) because she cares more about trading currency than trading kisses. Foon's work life then gets turned upside-down when he gets a ruthless -- and drop-dead gorgeous -- boss, Mrs. Lam (Cherie Chung), who also just happens to have a recently broken marriage. After falling over himself in pursuit of the lovely Mrs. Lam, Foon settles down with old girlfriend Jenny (Elizabeth Lee), who is looking for a safe place after a break-up with her boyfriend. Things get complicated when workaholic Ann finds more and more of her work is getting assigned to junior associates and perpetually frazzled Foon is asked to fire one of his best friends. Can Foon and Ann find fulfillment in either their fast-lane careers or their chaotic love lives? Compelling comic performances by the entire cast bring the movie to life. Carol Cheng is effective in her role as the wife who strives for career success over a happy marriage and ends up failing in both roles. Cherie Chung in a relatively minor role turbocharges the entire film with her charisma. Director Gordon Chan keeps the complicated story moving. I recommend "The Yuppie Fantasia" as a very pleasant diversion. |

The Yuppie Fantasia (Hong Kong, 1989)
| I liked this movie very much. Lawrence Cheng, Carol Cheng, Cherie Chung, Sibelle Hu, Elizabeth Lee, Chow Mei-fung, Dang Sui-man, etc...... make this a great cast. Jacky Cheung has a song in the middle of the film. This film was directed by Gordon Chan, notably known for directing "The Final Option" (1994). |
