Based on the best-selling mobile phone novel, Threads of Destiny (a.k.a. Akai Ito) follows the destined romance of two youth who are torn apart by trials but, as if tied together by the red thread of fate, keep being led back to each other. Oft compared to Koizora, Threads of Destiny was conceived as both a TV mini-series and a feature film with the same cast and crew. The TV drama's first two episodes were aired on Fuji TV in early December 2008 before the film opened on December 20. The story is then expanded in the remaining episodes of the drama. Directed by Murakami Shosuke (Train Man), Threads of Destiny touches on tough issues like suicide, drug addiction, abuse, and divorce, while remaining at its core a moving coming-of-age story about youth, love, and friendship. Rising stars Minamisawa Nao from Zou no Senaka and Mizobata Junpei from Dive!! and Hanazakari no Kimitachi e play the film's star-crossed lovers along with a fresh supporting cast that includes Yanagishita Tomo (Takumi-kun: Soshite Harukaze ni Sasayaite), Kimura Ryo (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, Nodame Cantabile), and Iwata Sayuri (Tokyo Uso)
With a loving family and close friends by her side, schoolgirl Mei (Minamisawa Nao) always greets life with a wide smile and infectious cheer. After losing her longtime crush, she meets transfer student Atsushi (Mizobata Junpei), a quiet and secretive guy who joins her circle of friends. Mei and Atsushi soon find they have much in common: they share the same birthday - February 29 - and met each other before as kids. Though seemingly destined for each other, the two separate when Atsushi discovers a tragic secret about their past. Kept in the dark about the truth, Mei can only hold strong to fate as love, family, and friendship begin to fall apart.

The two begin to realize that they share many things in common that seem to transcend mere coincidence: the same birthday (February 29th, 1992) and a previous encounter when they were both 8.
