YesAsia Editorial Description

Three is an omnibus horror film which spotlights Chinese and Asian supernatural sensibilities. Directed by three acclaimed Asian directors from Hong Kong, Thailand, and Korea, the three short films explore the supernatural as well as the dark sides of human nature.

Hong Kong director Peter Chan's segment "Going Home" combines the screen talents of many prominent film luminaries. A policeman (Eric Tsang) breaks into the apartment of his odd neighbor (Leon Lai) to look for his missing son, and ends up finding much more than he bargained for.

This disturbing tale cleaned up at the 39th Golden Horse Awards. Multi-award-winning cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who provided the film's beautifully eerie look, won for "Best Cinematography." Leon Lai picked up his first "Best Leading Actor" award, and Eugenia Yuan won a "Best Newcomer" award for her portrayal of a corpse.

Professional Review of "Three - Going Home"

February 10, 2003

This professional review refers to Three - Going Home (Director's Cut)
Going Home is not a brand new production, it is the extended version of the short story directed by Peter Chan in Three. Chan extracted Going Home from Three, added about five minutes of footage and released the movie for a theatrical run at the end of the year. It is said that Peter Chan was very satisfied with Leon Lai's outstanding performance, that he didn't want Lai to miss the opportunity to be nominated for best actor at the Golden Horse Award Ceremony and Hong Kong Film Academy Award Ceremony. Going Home was therefore released separately from Three as a result.

The story starts off with Wai (Eric Tsang) and his son moving in an old building. There they meet Fai (Leon Lai), the only tenant still living in the building. One day, Wai's son disappears, Wai looks for him and he discovers that Fai is keeping a dead body in his apartment... One must ask, how is it different from the original version? The addition is not very critical. Apparently, the extended portion doesn't affect the premise of the story at all. It seems that Peter Chan is quite satisfied with the original version, especially the part with Leon Lai and his wife, most of the addition is rather allotted to the relationship between Eric Tsang and his son. Unexplained scenes in the original, for instance, the photograph taking scene, are still left unresolved.

As I have mentioned about, the addition is mainly about Eric Tsang and his son. Their relationship looks much more intimate with the insertion of several scenes depicting their daily life. In the scene when they are eating at a restaurant, a few dialogues are added, when Wai's son asks him why he is wearing a broken watch, Wai tells him that the watch is related to his wife and he believes that the watch will work again in the future. This dialogue, in some scenes, connect Wai and Fai together. Wai's passion to her wife parallels to Fai's love to Hai (Eugenia Yuan). Both of them are actually the same type of people, they love their wife so much that they are both waiting for a miracle to happen. The only difference is that Fai is more active in making his dream comes true, while Wai is just waiting passively.

If you view this story from a broader perspective, you will notice that it is not merely a story about eternal love, there is in fact a hidden message behind. Try to think what causes the tragedy of Fai at the end. Is Fai really crazy? From the cue in the movie, it seems not. The one who breaks Fai's heart is not the car, it is indeed the police. Why? Because they do not believe that Fai will bring her wife back alive. Why don't they believe? It is because Hong Kong is always a city of no dream. Most people are not receptive and do not believe in dreams or miracle! It seems that Peter Chan wanted to remind us the importance of having a dream. To a certain extent, the decline of the film market in Hong Kong is partly due to the lack of creative talents. If we want to revive our film market, we need to refresh ourselves and bring our dream back alive!

This special edition of Going Home DVD is well made. Although the overall quality is still not comparable to Japanese and Korean DVDs, it is already top notch among most DVDs produced in Hong Kong. Special features include audio commentary (in Cantonese) and a brief making of featurette. This documentary contains some short interviews with the directors of Three. Yes, all three directors of the three shorts are covered, and the good thing is that removable subtitles are available!

Cool guy(s) - Leon Lai, Eric Tsang

A gem among all the trash. Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Don't bother with the original DVD that has all 3 short films. This one is the only one worth seeing. Hong Kong turns out trash films on a regular basis, and this one is a gem among all the trash. The profound and moving story is of the kind that we see too rarely, and should treasure always.

Highly recommended Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
At first sight, Three - Going Home doesn't seem like a particularly appealing movie; there's no glamour, no endless list of big-name actors, no huge cast, no action, no comedy, and it's not even an hour long! For these reasons, it could have been a total failure at the box-office, but it wasn't...each and every member of cast and crew did an excellent job in making this film so watchable. Worthy of mention is Leon Lai who has managed to take his acting skills to another level and gave such a subtle and low-key yet touching performance. I think this role should shake off that idol/cool/pretty-boy label that most people associate him with. Eugenia Yuan and Lee Ting-Fung are also faces that I will be very pleased to see in the future of HK cinema.
Honestly speaking, this film is not as good as Peter Chan's 1996 offering, 'Comrades, Almost A Love Story', (but then again I don't think anything can ever surpass it), but Going Home is a magnificent piece of work nonetheless and definitely nearing the level of 'Comrades...' Hopefully we will not have to wait as long as 6 years to see another Peter Chan-Leon Lai-Eric Tsang-Christopher Doyle-Jojo Hui collaboration; 2 out of 2 wonderful and successful films with this team is not bad at all!

Read the Highlight & your life is like that too! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
After reading the highlight, I like the movie more. At first I didn't understand every detail of the movie because I am not so deep like a professional. Now I really think that the movie is well made & everything is cool!

Beautiful Film Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Going Home" was a beautiful film, with jaw-dropping cinematography by Christopher Doyle and assured, graceful direction by Peter Chan. I had to sit through the other 2 painfully bad shorts in the theatre before I got to this gem, but it was all worth it. Now that they have this as a director's cut, I actually returned my copy of the "Three" DVD and am going to order this instead. That way, I won't have the 2 other stinkers cluttering up my shelf. Trust me, get this and not the "Three" DVD, and save yourself the pain of watching 2 bad movies. I wish I could've done that in the cinema.

Buy the original "Three" DVD, this version is for Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
another review didn't get it...if you buy this one you are only putting another Leon DVD in your fab Leon fan collection...There is an original version of three that has all 3 movies duh! I own a copy myself (vcd though). I think this is better though to only get the Leon part since Leon is the only reason I bought the original. Now that they made a version only for his part...that's great can't wait to get myself a copy!
