YesAsia Editorial Description
'04 was an unstable year for the trio now consisting of Okano Akihito on vocals, guitarist Shindoh Haruichi and supporting bassist Shiratama Masami. In June of that year ex-bassist TAMA left the band and even though the sales for their 2 compilations BEST RED'S + BEST BLUE'S were going well, it almost seemed as if the glorious days of Porno Graffitti were over. However, now they are back with a vengeance offering you all new Porno Graffitti material. The title of the band's 5th LP THUMPx refers to the THUMPing sound of the heart because their aim is to make the hearts of all listeners beat to the sound of their latest 14-track charged music delight. Music lovers far and wide can look forward to Porno Graffitti's smash single Sister, the J-TV series theme song Sunset Romance as well as their red hot double single hits Neo Melodramatic & ROLL plus more!

8 months after their Best-of albums and over 2 years since their last studio album, Porno Graffitti returns with their fifth album THUMPx. This is an especially important album for the band since it is their first without bassist Tama. Fortunately, the album is a successful mix of rock and pop that will not only satisfy fans of the band, but also should attract new fans as well. THUMPx starts off with the light Ouch!! that sets the tone. The intro is something that one might hear from a 70s rock n roll song, and becomes an impressive mix of live sound and nostalgic 70s rock. The album then takes a dive into a heavier electronic sound with Neo-Dramatic, showcasing the band?s ability to travel across different types of rock. The album continues down the path of lighter rock tracks that favors a more live sound, including my personal favorite Twilight Romance. While it?s an unabashedly mainstream love song, the arrangement (in which the band chooses a wider-ranging sound) makes the track stand out from the rest of the album. Twilight is also very unique in its arrangement. The first minute and a half is a treat to listen to on headphones, and then it turns into a mellow mid-beat track that once again showcases the band?s versatility. The album then returns closer to the band?s style with more upbeat tracks like Roll and the smash single Sister that sustains the album's energy until the final, standout track: Nandomo. The song again shows that a band deeply rooted in rock can produce a simple yet effective ballad. Fortunately, the dominance of louder rock tracks on the album makes these two songs stand out even more. Despite the departure of a prominent band member, Porno Graffitti still delivers a fairly strong album that is able to cross into different variations of the rock genre to not only please old fans, but attract new fans as well. The album succeeds in striking a balance between what one might expect from a mainstream rock band and unabashed pop songs that work well with the rest of the album. THUMPx may not do anything to change the genre, but it travels outside of its bounds enough to keep itself fresh from beginning to end. By Kevin Ma |

I am a true fan of Porno Graffitti and this is the first album that I bought, although it's not their first one. But this TRULY is one of the best album I've ever ordered! - it has everything, Akihito's voice in so many different, satisfying motions, and each and every one of them is just so lovable. My personal favourites are Track 7, ROLL, which is a kind of cute mid-temp song; Akihito's type of opening singing to this track is just adorable; I can't dare to declare that his voice work - and his wonderful choir - is amazing. Akihito's low, shivering, trembling voice in the beginning of track 5, Twilight, sends shivers down my spine. Take my advice and listen to track 5, close your eyes and fall back in your chair; if you don't feel relaxed and touched by that, you don't like... to be free and peaceful. As mentioned in the description to this cd, THUMPX really goes straight to the heart of the fans! Don't hesitate to hear it out for yourself. You won't regret it! |
