James Tien (Shaolin Boxers) and Pai Ying (Bandits from Shantung) are the nominal stars of this early 70s martial arts melee, but genre fans will be far more interested in Angela Mao's pre-celebrity supporting role. Mao's breakthrough hits Lady Whirlwind and Hapkido were still a ways off, but Thunderbolt offered clear evidence of her action star potential. Despite her limited onscreen fight time, she would go on to become Hong Kong Cinema's seminal kung fu heroine, paving the way for the likes of Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Khan, and leaving an indelible mark on movie history.

The venerable Fei Long clan of fighters welcome the mysterious swordsman Hung Wei (Pai Ying) into their ranks after his splendid technique wows the clan's five chieftains. Thinking they have gained a trustworthy new ally, Fei Long's leaders leave the stewardship of the clan in Hung's hands when they are summoned to the remote reaches of their domain to battle the nefarious Black Tiger Gang. But the entire thing's a setup engineered by Hung to seize control of the Fei Long society and assassinate the clan patriarchs. Realizing they've been double-crossed, Chief Chen (Tien) teams up with the tough-as-nails sister (Mao) of a fellow clan leader to challenge Hung and regain control of Fei Long.

飛龍寨是江湖上一個大幫，三位寨主龍麟、貝奮、陳英傑及麟之妹龍珠，替天行道，馳譽武林。一天，寨外來了一高手，名叫洪威，旋風劍厲害無比。大、二寨主以洪勇武可欽，並結拜為兄弟，誓曰：若有違誓，五雷轟頂而亡。此時，武林黑道黑虎堂，大舉攻佔飛龍寨各地分舵，麟怒，親領人馬馳援，留洪、珠鎮守大寨。麟等走後，洪即佔領飛龍寨。原洪為黑虎堂黨羽，期間，殺總堂主而自立，並散播謠言，使傑、珠不能立足於武林。傑、珠苦極，藏身隱秘處。珠苦練絕招「五雷鑿」，傑則自毀容，混入黑虎堂當臥底。後麟覓得珠，始知中計，遂合力抗洪。

The Fei Long Society, under the administration of chiefs Lung Lin, Pei Fen, Chen Ying - chieh and Lung's sister Lung Chu, enjoys high prestige. One day, a swordsman Hung Wei comes to join them. Hung later gets admitted after impressing the other chiefs with his fine fighting ability. The society's sub-branches soon come under the attack of the Black Tiger Gang. The chiefs of Fei Long Society head off to the branches in an attempt to save the situation. In their absence, the Society's stronghold falls to Hung's hand. Chen and Lung are attacked by Hung and his men. Lung swears to bring Chen back to justice......
