THX 1138은 획일적S으로 통제되는, 기술 사회의 한 구성원으로서 노동자로 일한다. 그런데 의무적으로 먹어야 하는 진정제가 효과가 없기 때문인지 할당된 작업을 수행하는 데 지장을 받게 된다. 그는 그런 고민을 ‘공동체교회(unichapel)’의 ‘옴(omm)’이란 기계적인 사제에게 털어 놓으며, 자신에게 뭐가 문제인지를 묻는다. 사실은, 그의 방 동료인 LUH 3417이 진정제 대신 흥분제로 약을 바꿔 온 것으로써, 그녀는 약물과 법에 의해 억눌려온 이성에 대한 사랑을 갈구한 나머지 그런 불법 행위를 한 것이었다. 둘은 당국에서 법으로 금한 성적 관계를 맺는다. 한편 THX는 SEN 5241의 관심을 끌게 되는데, 그는 통제 당국의 관료로서 THX와 한 방을 쓰기 위해 컴퓨터 프로그램을 불법으로 조작, LUH를 다른 곳으로 전출시킨다. THX는 SEN의 불법 행위를 상부에 보고한 뒤, 근무를 하던 중 사고를 내게 되고, 그 과정에서 약물 복용 기피 사실이 드러나 재판을 받은 뒤, 정신을 마비시킬 듯이 사방이 온통 하얀 구류 구역에 갇히고 만다.

Wow, I've never even heard of this movie before..but when I seen it was on DVD and it was George Lucas' first movie. I was really interested in it. I watched it and I was amazed. The sound effects and the voices are done wonderfully, I'm sure they sound a lot better than they did in the theatre back in the 1970's. This is a dark movie, not scary though. It's about a man that is trying to escape from something, to get out from a world where humans are slaves but they do not realize it.
