Tian Zhen's fierce heart
|
If you enjoy rock music and you want to hear the current state of the art, buy Tian Zhen's "38.5°C". It is a very special treat. I first chanced upon Tian Zhen's music over a decade ago when on a whim I bought her 1998 release, "Ganbei Pengyou". If there were any justice in this world, that album's collection of bluesy rockers and folksy ballads now would be regarded as a timeless classic; instead, it's out of print. Tian Zhen's slightly raspy, slightly smoky vocals were unforgettable and she revealed a lovely, innocent vulnerability on those acoustic ballads. On "38.5°C", Miss Tian's vocals remain a bit raspy and a bit smoky, but now they are more mature, more strident, and, when she strives for vulnerability (as she does on tracks 6 and 9), it is a vulnerability drawn from life's hard knocks. Tian Zhen is the real deal and she sings from her fierce heart. The album's opening song is a striking concoction, featuring scorching speed metal verses spiked with soaringly melodic choruses. Track 2 pours it on with a driving, synth-based rocker. After that, Tian Zhen mixes things up with a variety of anthemic ballads and rock songs with a diverse array of arrangements. She brings the album to a close with a bluesy number similar to those found on "Ganbei Pengyou". The talented Miss Tian deserves a big worldwide audience. Buy "38.5°C" and spread the word! |

Something very, very...
Something very, very...
| This CD is hard to describe. It's very dark...almost gothic in feeling. Her sound is like nothing I have heard ever. Not exactly something I will play frequently, but I give her a 10 anyway because she is immensely talented and has one seriously powerful voice. The videos are interesting and a little disturbing to those of us who do not speak the language...we have to guess what is being depicted. And there is a lot of blood and abuse in the videos...some veiled sexuality too (in cartoon format) with a woman removing her thong underwear before pulling the man into bed. Again, I'm not very certain what she is trying to say...but, it is definitely off the beaten path of mainstream Chinese pop or even Chinese rock music. I couldn't even try to compare her to anyone because she is just so much herself. Still, being different is not all bad...she stands out, that's for sure. And she is very gifted vocally and is also attractive. Just know that if you buy this, you will be getting something incredibly distinctive in nature. Absolutely not standard style or material. She sets herself apart and it works for her, even if it isn't my normal listening type. |

UNIQUE!
UNIQUE!
| While on first listen, this isn't my usual taste...I find that the CD is actually quite good. Her voice is extremely unique...so much so, that I cannot think of a comparison. She is on the contralto side of range (a bit lower than my preference...), but very vibrant and the passion overflows on each song. The songs are each unique, yet merge together to form a very cohesive release that is extremely different from anything else on the market...but nice. And the PAL DVD actually played on my NTSC only player. I have to admit, song #1 is a bit loud and over-done (it sounds a bit like random noise at first)...but the rest is excellent. If you want someone with a rock sound and lower-than-usual-voice...check this out. It's definitely different and yet intriquing. |
