Superstar Chow Yun-fat and ego-casualty Conan Lee continue a rich Hong Kong action movie tradition of wearing the ugliest clothes on earth while fighting crime. Chow Yun-fat is resplendent in his Hawaiian shirts, yellow slacks, and tiny leather cap which he replaces with a tennis visor for formal occasions. Conan Lee, who was being developed as the next Jackie Chan before planet-shattering arrogance sunk his career, hurls his over-muscled frame around the screen in jheri curls and an acid-washed denim parka.
Like Lethal Weapon (only funnier and better), Tiger on the Beat has Conan and Chow putting the "odd" in "odd couple". Chow Yun-fat is the squealing, cowardly womanizing cop and Conan Lee is the muscle-bound butch one who's good at ripping the hoods off hurtling cars with his thick-veined paws. Opening, not with action, but with Chow Yun-fat outfoxing a jealous husband, the good Mr. Chow is promptly taken hostage in the Hot Gossip Coffee Shop and wets himself in fear before passing out. Conan shows up and lays the punks on the floor with one twitch of his sculpted pecs. Commissioner Butt (no kidding) assigns Chow and Conan to work together on a drugs case (we assume it's cocaine - referred to as "stuffs" by the English and Chinese subtitles). Norman Chu is smuggling stuffs into Hong Kong inside windsurfing boards, squashing the competition into bright red splooches on the cement via his right-hand sociopath, Gordon Liu. Liu is the iconic bald-headed star of classic kung fu pic 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which was directed (like Tiger on the Beat) by his brother, Lau Kar-leung, the director of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master II and a living legend if ever there was one. Chow and Conan decide to get at Norman by putting the squeeze on Marydonna (Nina Li) an aerobics instructor who's peddling coke for her brother between leg lifts and fanny tucks. Her brother is just trying to make an honest living selling Norman's stuffs out from under him, but Norman catches on and....splooch! Then Norman and Gordon decide Marydonna's taught her last class, and the bodies go flying as Marydonna turns to the police for protection. Specifically she turns to Chow and Conan who are forced to take on a veritable army of drug dealers in test pattern sweaters as they try to protect her. The movie's zero tolerance policy is put into effect as Chow Yun-fat carves big fleshy gobs out of his opponents with a 12 gauge, and Conan Lee takes up chainsaws against an army of troubles. Windsurfing, aerobics, drugs, bad clothes, chainsaws, Le Cars - there's one word for this action spectacular: it's Eighties-riffic! by Grady Hendrix |

Upcoming star Chow Yun Fat (I think the movie was tailored for him) and new comer Conan Lee (too beefcake looking) starred as some lethal weapon partnership. High class action and some comedy bits thrown in. Cameo appearances by Ti Lung as the barowner and Lydia Sum as sales assistant in the department store (selling lingerie). Hats off to Fatt for downing almost 8 raw eggs (must be only in one single take). Love Gordon in this movie although his part was played down tremendously (to give Fatt and Conan a chance) as the loyal righthand man of the drug dealer (another regular of Lau Kar Leung's movies). Gordon's foot was almost sawn off in the fight sequence with Conan (inexperienced nerd). With his fitness and trim, taut, terrific outlook, he outdo everyone in their stunts. Wish he had kept this haircut for his other movies instead of that stiff wig. Gordon's fans must buy this!! |

| This movie has it all. If you are looking for a good gun slinging and martial arts movie this one is definitely a must have. Has a excellent dose of comedy in there as well, but the ending is definitely the main course of this movie for those who wants kung fu and action appetites!! |
