New Music on Old Days: A Surprise from David Huang Ta-wei "Time 1894-2003"

Born in Hong Kong and grown in Hawaii, David Huang Ta-wei still has one more year left before stepping into his forties but he simply cannot take his hands of all the various musical elements on his latest compilation album. His new work aims to take us back to the year 1894, exactly as we are being told by the footnote on his new release. David is in charge of all the melodies, lyrics and production on this multi-genre disc and five more contributors have rewritten the Mandarin lyrics based on David’s original ideas.

The first track "My World" is electro-pop spiced up with MC's lively rendition. Written by Lin Li-nan, "Backview" depicts one's stubborn persistence on love with an old fashioned formula, which depicts that separation is the only way to make love more meaningful. Both the tune and the lyrics are presented in an absorbing manner, making this song an extremely appealing piece of work.

Once in a while we may locate fast- paced songs in the music world of this mellow-tune expert. The mid-tempo number "In & Out Together"(Track 4) is probably the "fastest" number on this album. Cheng Jia-li, the lyric-writer, exemplifies the philosophy of love with some distinct metaphors. For instance, the line "Let intuition lead the way without any dictionary or any map" refers to the idea of rational love.

Compared with "In & Out Together", "Afraid of Love"(Track 5) is a completely different world with Yao Ruo-long's words triggering self-reflection. Here the most scary is not the "subzero" coldness but "weary speechless expressions".

Without its lyrics and vocals, "Slip of the Tongue" (Track 7) would probably be best suited for a guitar solo . The most anticipating thing is the free-flowing guitar jamming. It is a pity that while David has the determination to have a breakthrough, he still limits himself to the vocal rendition on this tune.

The highlight of this album is the 26-minute "The Trilogy of Sino-Japanese War" comprising "Dragon Race", "A Beautiful World" and "Brutal Battle at Yellow Sea" (Track 11-13). The trilogy presents the recent Chinese history using a lot of Chinese orchestral music with a nice surprise found in the English rapping on " Dragon Race ".

Recommended: "The Trilogy of Sino-Japanese War"- "Dragon Race ","A Beautiful World" & "Brutal Battle at Yellow Sea"
